Microsoft said it will be storing Internet Protocol addresses and other Web search data for 18 months only, unless users want the information stored for longer.
Days after Google announced it will retain cookies containing user data for two years, interestingly, Microsoft and Yahoo! have announced somewhat similar data retention policies.
Microsoft said it will be storing Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and other Web search data for 18 months only, unless users want the information stored for longer.
Besides, Microsoft will store such terms from user account information separately -- that personally identify users in some way.
The company also said it would allow users opt out of behavioral ad targeting that is offered on third-party Web sites.
Meanwhile, Yahoo! said it will be removing portions of IP addresses and personally identifiable cookie IDs after retaining them for 13 months -- unless of course the user or the company wants to retain the data for a longer while.
Last week, apart from Google, even Ask.com said it would allow users to search anonymously without retaining their search data. However, the company said that for those who did not wish to remain anonymous, their search data would be retained for no longer than 18 months.
All said, search engines seem to be in a race to outdo each other as regards retaining user data for not such a long time. The reason being a general apprehension regarding the risks associated with too long a retention period...
