In a shocking incident on June 19th, a welder based out of the Gansu Province in China succumbed to injuries when the Motorola cell phone in his chest pocket suddenly exploded resulting in his death.

Twenty-two-year-old Xiao Jinpeng died at a local hospital after emergency treatment failed, Bai Shixiong, commissar with the public security bureau of Jinta County, said.

The accident took place at noon on June 19th when Jinpeng was reportedly working at the Yingpan Iron Ore Dressing Plant in Jinta County, Gansu Province.

The case has been temporarily recorded as a work safety accident as the explosion occurred at the workplace.

The Chinese Xinhua news agency quoted the police as saying that preliminary investigations reveal that the phone battery exploded after being exposed to a high temperature, breaking Xiao's ribs, and penetrating into his heart,

Yet, local police and work safety officers are trying to ascertain the model of the Motorola phone and battery, and whether these had any quality problems.

According to sources, an investigation report is forthcoming on the matter.

Meanwhile, a public relations official at Motorola's China branch has said that while exploding cell phone batteries are very rare, Motorola is taking the incident very seriously, and will respect the results of the investigation.

may be it happened due to radio interference caused by welding set. radio waves emmitted by welding sets are very powerful, it can occur flickering on monitor or television if welding is done nearby(even if its not connected to the same power line).

what i said was technical, not saying it was the reason for incidence, what else should i say?? motorola produce bad quality mobiles?? absolutely not. other reason could be that the guy was welding at the moment, so some ghost came to him and exploded his cellphone. what i said later could be better only for you to know. ok sir?? what are parameters for the word "mature"?? explain briefly(assume that i am amateur)

@vejay and asyyas obviously you guys don't have a clue as to what welding is.. Arc welding machines do emit very strong fields. It is very much possible that these waves interfered with the mobile device causing it to malfunction.

You are of odd. Carry phone is not wise for any persons. For phone I make the driver of my automobile, secretary, wife or doughter carry phone. The person who close to me is to hold. Not myself!

It's true that RF waves from a high powered device can make a device like a phone fail but it can not make the battery explode. The exploding batteries were Chinese fake copies and they get shorts and heat up and explode.

If the death is due to cellphone explotion on account of high temperature, there should be a caution in the cellphone when the range of temperature/abnormality of the phone by giving signal and message so that holders of cell phone can prevent such happening.

I think we can be learning a most valuable lesson on cell phone storage. Do not be using the chest pocket, which is near the heart. Using the pants pocket.

Strange, I'm from Kharinistadjani as well! The real leson is that he should of taking the baddery out of the phone if he wants to store the phone in his chest pocket like i do. Maybe there was a holy war goin on and he was puntured with a nife

i remember an experiment; i did have an Nokia6275 from reliance, i used to connect to the net at home with that mobile(medium being bluetooth). one day i placed the mobile on AC remote, the mobile is'nt heavy such that it could press the buttons of the remote it was placed on, and the buttons of remote were pretty hard to press. after a few minutes i took the remote to lower the room temperature, i realized that the remote was in reset state. i again put its setting back, again put it near the mobile, it again came to reset state. what was that?? i tried same thing changing the mobile to LG Moonlite. it did the same........so the moral of this real story is............u know........

Its not a hoax....its infact one of the many incidents of motorola and nokia phones exploding due to possibly counterfeit batteries. Due to high sales volume of these 2 companies their fake accessories are readily available.

I saw similar incident occuring with Dell Laptop batteries ..even though it is rare but one can not neglect this fact.. not to scare you but best is to keep yourself away and use moderately...

Batteries explode when you expose them to high temperatures. Welding is a localized heat and would probably not cause this. If he was in a smelting room or working an oven door, I can see this happening. They put warning labels on batteries for a reason.. they contain dangerous chemicals and can leak, melt, and go boom in your pocket.

I am wondering if this is a common problem with this type of phone or perhaps was it a defective replacement battery?
