Build, Finish & Setup
The build quality is pretty good and same can be said about the full black finish. So Tech-Com scores some points there. Unlike their 4201R model, the 5001R has a different design for the center speaker. That makes it easier to understand how to place the speakers. The satellites are lighter than usual, whereas the front-firing wooden sub-woofer is on the heavier side, as expected. The cable setup was a bit confusing at the start as Tech-Com had sent some extras. Initially, we had expected there to be 6 RCA jacks, out of which 3 of them were supposed to be RCA to Stereo jacks. However, we received 4 RCA to RCA cables, which suggested the use of a DVD player and not a 5.1 sound card. This may not be a concern for people who plan on connecting these speakers to their DVD players and not to their PC; but its ideal you check what cables are in the package before you purchase the product.

The 4 satellites carry 3-inch mid-range drivers (1 each) as well as a 1 inch tweeter to supposedly enhance the highs (but it didn't seem to). The center satellite is equipped with two 3 inch mid-range drivers as well as a 1 inch tweeter between the two. The sub-woofer packs a 5.25 inch driver, which like I said before, is a front-firing one. Max output is mentioned as 6200 Watts PMPO, but there is no mention of any RMS rating. And PMPO is a meaningless measure for us. The heat sink rests at the back of the sub-woofer alongwith the input and output connections.

The front of the sub-woofer has the basic buttons namely, Power, 5.1/Aux, Menu, Vol + and Vol - , out of which 5.1/Aux is used to switch between 5.1 and 2.1 and the Menu button is used to select a setting to change using the volume controls. You can select the Centre, Satellite and Sub-woofer volume using the Menu button first and then adjust the volume using the controls.

Also provided is a remote control; nothing much to say about it, just that it looked great on the website. Even when we actually saw the real thing it didn't seem half bad. But when I held it in my hand, the cheap plastic body, as well as the shoddy buttons made it seem like a hastily made product.
