Hyderabad-based IT research company, Drishti Systems, has claimed launching the world's first statistical pornography filter, 'NetOptima N101'.

Simply put, 'NetOptima N101' is a plug-n-play hardware device that proceeds to block all pornographic content, whether in Web sites, emails, documents, blogs, or community Web sites like Google groups, Yahoo groups, etc.

Anil K Chandra, Head of R&D, Drishti Systems, said, "NetOptima N101 provides an effective way for IT and security managers to deter the abuse of Internet privileges. The product is increasingly essential to businesses, educational institutions, government agencies, and other 'connected' organizations."

Unlike typical security-related products that come in the form of softwares, 'NetOptima N101' is a hardware platform.

Using a pattern-based filtering method, the hardware analyzes the Web page whilst it is loading for pre-defined patterns, effectively blocking pornographic content.

N101 uses patented searching and profiling algorithms to statistically identify the document based on various characteristics of the page, in addition to keyword distribution, frequency, and multi-word patterns.

According to Drishti, the device analyses data packets at network level itself, reading data page by page. Hence, the company says N101 would block only those pages that contain pornographic material, and not the entire Web site.

'NetOptima N101' is ported on MIPS32 266 MHz with 32 MB memory, and can filter 4mbps peak and 2mbps average bandwidth. According to Drishti, N101 can even be ported on bigger machines to filter traffic up to 100 mbps.

Targeted at educational institutions, government organizations, corporates, and ISPs, 'NetOptima N101' is priced at Rs 65,000 per device, with no additional subscription charges. Besides one device is enough, according to the company, to optimally support about 500 computers that are engaged in surfing the Internet.

The device is first launching in Andhra Pradesh with other states in the country, the Middle East, and USA to follow suit, Chandra said.

In another development, Drishti has announced the launch of Drishti Broadband, once again claimed to be the world's first porn-filtered broadband service.
