HopeLab's video game named "Re-Mission" is being offered free-of-charge to teenagers and young adults suffering from Cancer and other chronic illnesses.
According to reports, game developer and non-profit organisation, HopeLab, has come up with an innovative concept to help patients fight terminal diseases like Cancer.
As part of a joint initiative between Cigna HealthCare and HopeLab, HopeLab's video game named "Re-Mission" is being offered free-of-charge to teenagers and young adults suffering from Cancer and other chronic illnesses.
"Re-Mission" is a challenging, 3-D shooter with 20 levels of game play in which players control a nanobot named 'Roxxi' as she travels through the bodies of fictional Cancer patients; destroying cancerous cells, battling bacterial infections, and managing the umpteen side effects associated with the disease and its treatment.
According to HopeLab, the game is both fun and serious, helping players understand the importance of adhering to treatment, and of key behaviors that might help them improve their health.
Pat Christen, President of HopeLab, said 'Re-Mission works' as it gives young people with Cancer a sense of power and control over their disease. Christen said it is a powerful example of how rigorous research and rational engineering, combined with fun engaging game technology can improve lives.
Christen pointed out that teaming-up with Cigna HealthCare provides a great opportunity to get this game into the hands of clinicians and patients who would most benefit from it.
And, HopeLab claims it has validated the benefits of its Cancer-fighting video game through a randomized, controlled trial with 375 male and female Cancer patients, aged between 13 to 29, and enrolled at 34 medical centers in the US, Canada, and Australia.
Dr Gary Dahl, Paediatric Oncologist at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford University, California, voiced the view that "Re-Mission" is an important tool to help improve understanding of Cancer, its treatment, and side-effects, and can result in greater confidence in the ability to deal with this disease.
Meanwhile, "Re-Mission" is available-to-order (for free) in CD and DVD formats on the Cigna website at http://www.cigna.com/re-mission. It is also available as a free download at www.re-mission.net.
