Canon
By far, Canon produces some of the best digital cameras in the consumer segment and is also one of the most popular brands. Although most of them have a heavy premium attached, there are a few models that can still be yours for quite a reasonable sum. And trust me, the performance and ease of use will blow you away.
Canon PowerShot A540 : Rs.14,495
Although this is one of the older models from Canon, it still holds its own in the compact camera segment. It features a 6.0 Megapixel CCD and the lens is a 35(W) -140(T) mm with a 4x optical zoom. It sports 21 shooting modes, and a 4x digital zoom as well.

This was one of the first digital cameras to feature ISO 800 setting. It is powered by the DIGIC II processor that gives it the capability of a 9-point AiAF or Single Point AF system. It also has an Optical Zoom Viewfinder that helps a lot in conserving battery power. It supports SD/MMC memory cards and also allows video recording up to 1GB.
It's a brilliant option for someone who enjoys a no-frills photography experience.
Canon Powershot A560: Rs. 13,990
One of the more recent additions to the Powershot range from Canon, the A560 sports a generous 7 Megapixel CCD and a 35(W)-140(T) mm lens with a 4x optical zoom. It has a 2.5-inch LCD, 4x digital zoom and provides 14 shooting modes; the video recording allows you to use the full 16x capabilities of the camera.

It features the DIGIC III image processor that gives the A560 an edge over the previous generation DIGIC II powered cameras. It offers better AiAF handling capabilities and an ISO setting of up to 1600. It also offers on-camera photo stitching to create wide panoramic landscapes. It supports SD/MMC memory cards and also allows video recording up to 1GB.
Although priced lower than its predecessor, this one offers all the usual bells and whistles and some more advanced options as well. And if you are the one who wants to learn more and more, this one's for you.
