A Budget to Click: Cams Under 15K

Digital camera on your mind, but can't decide on one? Here's a list of select models to help you grab one within 15K.

When it comes to digital photography, we have so many camera options that it can leave an average consumer quite confused. Sometimes I start missing the good old days of the film-based cameras. All you had to do was select from some 8-10 cameras, get a Kodak or Fuji film, load it and start clicking.

But that's not the way it works now, is it? No worries. In this feature, we will showcase some of the best digicams you can get within Rs. 15,000.

We may or may not be aware of this, but Indians have a serious case of "Brand Loyalty" syndrome; probably more than most people around the world. Now, I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but I want to point out that sometimes we miss out on a better deal or product only because we are loyal to a particular brand. Is that fair to us? I leave that for you to decide. What I will do is give you options across all brands so you can take your pick amongst your old and new favorite brands.

Before we proceed, let me say this as well, the cameras listed here have not been ranked or rated against each other. These are best Value for Money deals that you can get for around Rs 15,000 with a particular brand.

I would say, as per this article, Olympus all weather is the best value for money camera here.. whatever the format for the memory card, you will mostly move images from card to PC via USB.. so its good enough.

xd cards are very slow to write. So be wary of Olympus XD only cameras. Canon is usually the best. And Fuji with the option of XD or SD is good

Never buy any Product from Kodak. As I have bought one and faced the reality within very short time. NO response from KODAK or any possibility of help or warrenty. So, avoid it always. Best of Luck.

Dude, I'm sure you are on the payrolls of cafegadgets.in . Their prices stink in comarision to indiatimes, rediff and Futurebazaar. On top of that, they are pushing gray market products (Products without manufacturers warrenty?)

This is the information for everyone....buy any camera but always opt for the camera with built in rechargable battery pack and not with the cameras with rechargable cells because built in battery pack chargers lasts longer say about 9 to 12 days instead of 1 or 2 hours with cells. and another thing to remember authorised dealers give the warranty say approx 3 years Sony W35 & W55. and grey market cameras are not duplicate but they are smuggled and not tax paid so they are cheaper..thnx. amit

Amit I would differ entirely with you on the subject of use of re-chargeable AA batteries in digicams.? , I'm a big fan of cameras that use AA batteries. They're cheaper than their proprietary counterparts, and you can buy off-the-shelf batteries when your rechargeables die ( when U r on a holiday they do- so far from a electricity point-up in Himalayas) I use 3 digicams- Canon S3IS ?uses 4 AA- which give 500+ shots with 4 AA,s- A-710IS- gives 300+ shots with 2 chargeable AA,s & a Canon SD700 with a NB-5L lithium-ion battery . 220 shots- fully charged in 2006-- & now does about 150-60 shots only. I use a bulk charger-which charges 8 AA,s fully & then keeps them topped up thru a trickle charge. Worst is I am fearing that when this SD700IS batt.dies- replacement battery will be a problem for me & to the boot will be atleast $ 50-60 even in USA- because SD700IS is now discontinued. Whereas the chargeable AA NiMh batteries-even if they die (normally do about 200 charges )- new ones are US $ 1each from the US & Rs. 120 in India. Therefore I am of firm opinion that AA rechargeables are power source of choice- especially so in a country like India.

Ditto as Vijay. In India it doesn't make sense to buy rechargeable batteries unless you are an professional photographer. If batteries are not frequently recharged they die.

All of us Indians have a habit of buying anything from anywhere at the lowest price possible but beware of where you are buying from - camera in this case. All these so called online auction websites like Rediff, Ebay, Indiatimes, Sify, Cafegadgets, Future Bazaar and so on are outsourcing grey market products and passing them off with bill through seller tie ups. All the stuff sold in grey market and these websites is cheap but not original. Yes, it is not original, it is made in unauthorized factories in China with cheaper components inside. The stuff goes bad after some time and we blame the company for it who never made the product. Open your eyes, buy digicam and other products from authorized company showrooms with bill even if you have to pay extra. Atleast you will get an original product meant to work as company made it. Chinese have replicated everything. I have been cheated and have come to know about this racket so I will tell everyone.

Hi there, I think you are a bit confused. First of all when you buy any electronic product from anywhere in the world now a days, chances are those are made in China. China is the manufacturing hub of the world. Then again you are confusing Delhi Grey market with legitimate online retail stores like Sify, Indiatimes etc. If you buy from there you will get your warranty but of course the process of returning a faulty product becomes a bit difficult. Online retail stores are getting more popular around the world because of their convenience and cost. As the e-tail stores become more and more popular in India there exchange and return policies will also become comparable with International standards.

I've been not able to find the right camera, though you've listed a few but finally we dont have a comparison as to which one or model did the best. I see the sony cybershots lead the race but i'd love t o hear which one will be the best to buy.

The Fuji s 5700 seems to be the best of the lot. I am not in favour of small digicams that are difficult to hold for people above the age of 10, and cams that avoid a viewfinder and only offer a battery guzzling LCD screen.
