Soon - likely next month, Reliance Communications (RCom) will launch its wireless broadband technology aka WiMax in Pune and Bangalore, says a Times News Network (TNN) report.

The report further says that Reliance will extend its WiMax service to other cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Mumbai, after taking stock of customer response in these two cities.

Other major telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel, VSNL, and BSNL have tested WiMax, and are also mulling roll-out in the near future as per sources in-the-know.

However, as of now, only Aircel Cellular has launched WiMax services for business customers in Chennai.

Targeted at nearly 3 million wireless Internet users, the RCom WiMax service, the company believes, will give it a first-mover edge over other players in the industry.

An industry expert reportedly said that unlike wireless fidelity or WiFi, where radio waves can cover up to 30 meters, WiMax services are accessible for over 10 miles, theoretically speaking at least. WiMax offers better mobility to users, without having to be connected by wires to service operators.

WIMAX is a Non-Line of Site - N-LOS product which essentially helps the service provider in reaching the end customer (Last Mile) and get a trouble (cable cuts) free connect. Wimax being realistic is able to provide you connectivity upto 3-5 KM Radius (Depending on the amount of obstracles between the Base station (Mostly mobile towers being re-used) and the end customer's premises (mostly terrace). The speeds are good, Reliance plans to put 64 Towers to cover the entire length and breadth of Bangalore so that no area is left unfeasable. The Worst customer service I seen in my entire life. I gave complaint about 20 days back, I called 50-60 times but no body is responding. Even we go to government service they will resolve our issue in 5-7 days. Whenever we are calling they just taking our complaints and forwarding to another loaction. Person from another location will call after 5-6 hours . He also don't know ho to solve. Then he will tell field engineer will visit. No filed enginner will come ,even you call 10-10 times in a day . When you ask the engineer conatact number or his department number they won't tell you number. This the worst and more than worst service. I was able to connect only for 5 days and after that not able to connect .It is 3 weeks times. even we are asking how to discontinue servoce they are not telling. and sending the bills

Its quite Interesting..!!! just today two guys (contractors)came over to install the wimax connection at my home..After 6 hours they finally told me that the servers are down hence they are unable to get my connection. And finally the biggest surprise..@@!! They said..: " Sir, on the point of friendship we want to let you know that Reliance Wimax connection is Hopeless.!!! " Now im in a fix, I already have a TataIndicom cable broadband connection which is running farely well but they have the same story of server down very frequently and the simple reason I opted for RELIANCE is that they have wimax which would be free from cable cuts..@@ Now im wondering which one to keep..!!! Haha..!!! It happens only in India.!!

There are several issues in Reliance Wimax connection as the project is still in pilot basis in bangalore and pune. Initially i was also facing some issue but now i am getting the connection 90% of the time and the speed is superb. The following blog mentions most of the issues and technical details of the same http://www.reliance-wimax.blogspot.com/

Hi, I have been using reliance wimax from the past one month. I am living near to BTM water tank. The connection speed is good and I am getting the full speed - opted for 300 kbps plan and I am able to download a 700 MB movie in just 4 hours. The only problem is acquiring an IP address when you start your system. You have to refresh your connection 2-3 times. Once connected - no problem then.

Hi folks ...So far the service from reliance Wimax has been PATHETIC ( ill call it as an understatement ) Its been 3 weeks and it was only working for 4 days .... since then its down .. and not connecting ........ and the worst part is their service desk ... bunch of stupid, dumbest of the people they can get who try to fake an accent so mch ... but wen it comes to the real thing ,.... no words .. only false assurances of gettin the thing fixed asap ..... and that asap never happens ......!! i wonder how come reliance is still operating in india .. wherein they keep showing a similar face in their all areas in customer service !!!

Beware of Infospace Technologies (distributors of Reliance Wimax) I bought a Reliance Wimax connection from these guys. They promised me a connection in 2 weeks after collecting money from me, but were unable to do so saying there was no tower near my house in BTM Layout, Bangalore. However I ahve been asking them for a refund and they are not paying up!!! So guys please do not pay any money to these people in advance and get cheated.

I used the wimax max connection for 4 days only. The speed is very slow and the customer service is waste. I got bored to make complaints about the poor connectivity and speed. The technical people doesn't know anything and they are not telling any reason about the problem. If i made a complaint on one day, they are giving one complaint reference number after that no one is coming to solve the problem, but the complaint got closed in the customer support automatically. Finally i am not using the connection now. In my experience i found the following details. 1. The wimax service is not fully established in Bangalore. 2. Poor customer support 3. Reliance doesn't have a experienced technical persion to solve the issues. 4. Don't go for Reliance Wimax otherwise don't sign the acceptance form without checking the connectivity and speed.

Folks get ready to packup all your Wifi routers/wifi cards and give way to big brother Wimax@ last we got to see the true technology of wireless freedom
hemant_22
,pune, on May 23, 2007 05:13 PM
Dear wimax is point to point protocall and used to join diff wifi points togather and to distribute to user it uses wifi which is 802.11b or 802.11g....so you need wifi routers and card for connection :-)))
amit
,bangalore, on May 23, 2007 06:22 PM
dear hemant_22, pls go thru the std and clear ur basics about wimax, its not only p2p but even p2mp ( point 2 multipoint) and this is where wimax excels. And Comparison to Wifi is not required as Wimax emeges as a leader among all Wireless services.
vinay
,Mumbai, on May 24, 2007 08:56 AM
True wimax is p2mp but you need a base station for each client side device.Which makes it costly the better approach is use a Wifi device attached to a wimax base station and have a lan of wifi.Wimax is for WAN and not for LAN coz its costlier and would stay costlier as its cellular. 802.11n is the best thing thats gonna happen to end user.3G+ and wimax would easily been replaced by better stuff as soon as they are out. As an end user i would care about LAN stuff as i dont care if its ADSL,wimax or 3g on WAN. As for mobility all the bandwidth i need is for checking my email and i would go for the cheapest player in that be it GPRS EDGE or 3G or wimax which ver is cheaper.
amit
,Bangalore, on May 24, 2007 11:06 AM
Hi Vinay, u r absolultely correct. Wimax is what will enable and provide last mile efficient connectivity. You can any type of device associated with it. U can use Wimax as backhaul as well, where you can have Wi-Fi APs providing its users some bandwidth whatever a WiFi device can support, but u cannot call this "Broadband". If you have a wimax enabled device you can very easily reach 1Mbps, can you give me any device using WiFi with this data rate ? Wimax ensures this as a minimum data rate. Theoretically it can offer even 70Mbps but practically 20Mbps is what is sought, and WiFi can never provide you that.
Vinay
,Mumbai, on May 25, 2007 02:26 AM
Well if the concern is throughput then Wifi (802.11g)has a throughput of 19Mbps and max rate of 54Mbps,the 802.11n which is a boon for home users would be 74Mbps (throughput) and can peak to 250Mbps (max).this is what MIMO promises. In a scenario for a home user who receives a ADSL line of 2Mbps (max available @ affordable rates now) I makes more sense to create a high speed LAN to interconnect PC's and other media with affordable WIFI rather than dream about WIMAX which is not for LAN use. And for a mobility as i said before EDGE 3G are there for use like basic emails and chat even voice. There is a point where you take technology further i believe things that are there currently should be utilized and bettered rather than going behind stuff like WIMAX. Every house and village has a telephone network hence most can have ADSL lines and affordable WIFI attached to the existing lines makes more sense rather than invest in WIMAX which is not goona release soon or nither last long compared to 3G or the next wave prefered by cell phone companies
