    Microsoft has released the Xbox 360 Spring Update, which includes Windows Live Messenger along with several other new features.

Microsoft has released the Xbox 360 Spring Update, which includes Windows Live Messenger along with several other new features.

Under the update, Windows Live Messenger will be available on Xbox 360 to text chat with up to six people using the virtual keyboard, while playing games, listening to music, or watching movies.

According to Jerry Johnson, Product Unit Manager of Xbox Live at Microsoft, said, "Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox Live has really become the largest social network on television. With this announcement, we are simultaneously expanding access of Xbox Live users to existing friends and family, while introducing Windows Live Messenger users to the benefits of Xbox 360."

In addition, this summer, Microsoft will launch a Qwerty text-input device that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller to support text and instant messaging.

The Spring Update includes a gamut of new features, including a richer achievement notification pop-up for showcasing the name of the unlocked Achievement, gamerscore value eliminating the need to leave the game for checking the list, enhanced family settings features, etc.

The updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow players to have a quick look at what their friends are playing, and join in.

Besides, a new option has been introduced in the auto downloads, providing faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.

Meanwhile, new progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause, and resume as their video is downloaded from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

Further, using the extended background download functionality, users get to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

Apart from these, there are several other minor feature upgrades that have been made. The Spring Update is available for free, beginning this week, and will be easily accessible through Xbox Live or on Xbox.com.

werd to that i downloaded the update and i found that i am unable to use windows messenger.....if a child is allowed to use windows live messenger on his or her computer why should he or she be binded through his or her xbox 360...bad move for MS...that passport is binding..so they are technically forcing us into paying another year subscription just so we can use this service shame on you

You know you can get 2 years warrenty out of electrical products in the UK. You'll have to take it up with the shop you purchased the xbox from but products are supposed to last a reasonable length of time and thats considered 2 years. You don't even need a receipt by law. Look it up and replace your xbox.

My 360 bricked after the update, 3 red lights and a green light on the power supply. Mine is 1 month out of warranty...so I have to pay as well. It will take 15 business days to get it back....today is the 10th...and the Halo beta is when again??

The update is a waste of time. People with Windows live accounts under the age of 18 cannot use the instant messaging on xbox live. Microsoft need to change this or they will loose a lot of customer and a lot of money

You wont leave xbox live or your xbox 360 because your update don't work. PS3 and wii dont offer it and you were fine when the 360 didn't have it. When you were setting up your account and basically any account you know you run into trouble when you don't lie about your age and say your 18. In the future take my advice lie about your age unless your telling someone with a badge.

I just want to let you all know that the spring update that my xbox automatically downloaded last night has bricked it. I get 3 red lights on the ROL and the power supply LED is green. This means that I need to send it back! This is the second time it has happened to me (Fall update nightmare), but this time Microsoft tell me that I am out of warranty! The xbox they sent me after the last bricking was older and that one is out of warranty! I have to pay ?85 to get it repaired which I think is just criminal. They broke it, they should fix it. The support call centre in India say that it was just a coincidence, and that coincidence happened twice!!!!!! Microsoft: I am furious with you! later,
