PC gaming is dying, and what a grim end it will be. The Console is taking over and wining in every possible aspect. Console gaming is cheaper, comprises of more titles and is acquiring bigger names of the gaming industry. If I can elaborate, PC gaming can be considered like the Dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period. Once the rulers of the World (Gaming), until they are suddenly extinct and replaced by the smaller Mammals (Consoles, yes genius you guessed right). But bad examples aside, we can't ignore the fact that PC gaming is falling faster than the Stock Market and Britney Spears's career put together, multiplied by 2. Although there are a few titles like Crysis and Bioshock that act like rays of hope in the darkness, they can't carry the entire PC gaming industry on their shoulders. But let's assume for a brief period that it's a Perfect World and PC acquires the best console titles; wouldn't it be awesome to be able to play all the best console titles on a much better and powerful platform. Here is my list of console games that I would be thrilled to see cross platform to PC.

Genre: Racing
Burnout

Tell me, isn't this a brilliant idea? Burnout on the PC. Much better graphics, up to 8 players on LAN, playing Takedown and crashing each other on a higher resolution. It will be "Legendary" and will fast become the number one choice for racing games on the PC platform. EA, are you listening?

Grand Turismo

The ultimate racing test; a game for the real men of racing. The game looks brilliant on an age old system, imagine the possibilities on a PC. The game is respected world over and with its inclusion on the PC platform it will definitely make every racer's wish list. Again the idea of more players on LAN makes more sense than the ugly Split Screen.

Mario Cart

A racing game that is enjoyed mostly by kids, girls and your grand dad, this is a must for PC. Mario cart (MC) can be a great addition to the PC, with many reasons to support the cause. One major reason would have to be the fact that Mario Cart due to its low graphical demand can be a great option for low end graphic cards; something that you can play in your office or on basic laptops. With a brand as big as Mario, MC will be as popular as it is on the Nintendo Platform.

I know a lot of you guys are pc gamers out here and I am among the few who owns a pc as well as 4 consoles and I spend 80% of my time on a console rather than a pc.Let me put it this way. It doesn't seem to matter what PC I have, no matter what smokin' hot rod Graphics Board from Nvidia or ATI, and no matter how much RAM I upgrade to, PC games just tend to always be buggy. I'm sure there are those of you out there that will rave about how awesome your godly PC system is and how many FPS you get in Quake III or Everquest, but lets face the facts. How much time and money did you spend just achieve this?..50 grand?..And then there's downloading the patches, and the bug fixes. Ahh... isn't a game just supposed to play and not freeze halfway through, or allow for mysterious memory leaks that drain resources and slow down the gameplay to a crawl. As it is, no matter what your processor is, a lot of it's resources are not solely devoted to pushing polygons, rather, you have various Windows tasks running in the background gobbling up performance, and bottlenecking computational tasks unrelated to the video game, what's more, if you're system is not optimized properly closing what you think are active tasks still doesn't help.I can't tell you how much headache I've had trying to get a game that I bought to run properly on many of my PC's both previous and current. There was always some glitch, or point where the game would freeze and I would have to either Ctrl+Alt+Del out of it, or press the power button. Other times, the video drivers were out of date, and I had to either download the drivers (if they were available) of just forget about playing the game on that computer. I swear I had this 7 Disc PC CD-ROM game called "Ripper," and I could not find ONE SINGLE computer that would run this game without glitches or crashes. Mind you games like Sim-City, and many Real Time Strategy Games perform rather well in my experience, it's the other genre's that often suffer from annoying bugs and glitches galore. I have experience about 75% failure on many of my 3-D PC games. I will say this though, going back several years, from what I remember, many of the games that I played in DOS mode, never crashed. Like DOOM for instance. I could load that on just about anything built in 1994-1996 and it would play.Am I the only one who finds playing a 3-D video game distateful with a keyboard and mouse? Yeah having 103 buttons is swell, but is it really necessary? Playing video games in this fashion is cumbersome. Many 3-D PC games I've played were just plain annoying to play with the keyboard pressing the arrow keys to move around and swinging the mouse around to change the camera. The keyboard is not a controller, it's a giant brick. The mouse, is a pointing device, not an analog joystick. So what do you do? You go out and buy a controller for your computer, but alas, you plug it in and sure enough it doesn't work with your system because you don't have the latest drivers. You download the drivers. Then you realize that you have to program the buttons for each game! I mean come on, I could spend several hours, between locating the drivers, and determining the optimal button configuration before getting heavy into a game. That in inself takes the fun out of it, and truly I don't have that amount of time to waste when I could just be playing the game on a console.

You just dont get it, do you?? Pc gamers 'like' all that and 90% of them get those high frame rates w/o spending huge bucks - thru tweaking and overclocking. No u'll never get it.
Ryan
,Mumbai, on Apr 29, 2007 07:31 PM
No I understand exactly. My point is pc gaming is all about bragging rights..the guy owns the faster graphic card, processor etc and who gets the higher fps...whereas console gaming is all about fun.You can just sit on your couch and enjoy the damned game!
pc guy 5
,mumbai, on Apr 29, 2007 11:51 PM
tis' like I said , y'll never get it. Pc gamers never spend on anything except on your basic bare bones PC confign. And out of that squeezing top performance to play games is the 'kick' I'm talkin' abt. But hey ya'wont get it, I know for sure.
Ryan
,mumbai, on Apr 30, 2007 05:16 PM
I am sure you will be hard pressed to find any bare bones rig with even a decent mid range graphics card such as a geforce 7600 gs which is capable of running splinter cell double agent at even 30 fps(Even at a decent resolution of 1024 x 768 on medium quality settings).I really don't see the point in enduring endless hours of torture in tweaking your system to top notch perfection and then having a game which won't run on it unless of course you have a fetish for torture. For me its just that a console I can simply get down to the business of playing without fiddling with anything else. After all you are never meant to be meddling with stuff other than playing games. My intention is not to bash the pc gaming platform and when it comes to certain games like strategy games are best played on a pc.However its only the other kind of games I have a problem with and its just that a consoles intutive control mechanism and precision wins me over.Just play gears of war and you will understand exactly what I am talking about. I suppose you are most likely going to include the "you are never gonna get it" bull@$%t" in the next post too. Please make it a point to argue more effectively next time on.

the pc guy is right dude pc gaming is all abt tweaking ur program to the max u cant put patches and trainers in a console game try it out for urself dude buy one nfs most wanted and then tweak it with a trainer easily available online the functions leave u spell bound with ur mouth wide open
ryan
,mumbai, on May 07, 2007 09:17 PM
Heres my advice to you:atleast try a console first!...I have given my opinion only after trying all platforms so its a more wll rounded opinion.I"d still say console gaming offers a more better overall experience.Just give a shot at playing ridge racer or nfs:mw on a hdtv so that you can get the best experience on your machine and I am sure it will completely blow you away moreoever a c ontroller is simply meant for racing games and not a keyboard(A keyboard doesn't give you force feedback does it?).Somehow playing racing games on a controller just feels right and you never know it might just hook you on.
ryan
,mumbai, on May 07, 2007 09:23 PM
Dude using trainers is not my style.I hate using cheats while playing any kind of games. If you would prefer to use cheats then I reckon your not really a gamer at all.

pc gaming is all about thrill & passion . PC gaming has no end , but with only who possess the processing power and pixel kick from GPU . , like it's Nvidia meant to be played is true for PC . I to my knowledge played more than 350 pc titles all genres and think consoles are just beginners ( arrival 0f xbox 360 , PS3 is some fresh air). enjoy pc on 17" LCD.
Neo
,mumbai, on May 09, 2007 03:37 PM
Play it on a 17" lcd..lolz when you can play on 29" screen minimum or a 59" inch tv in all its high definition glory at 1080i(1900x1200 pixels)..dude just brush up your language skills first and we can start arguing when you begin to make better sense...get the slogan right atleast!(Thrill and passion..Is that a tag on some condom brand somewhere?).

1.why waste Rs.20000 on some console and then waste even more money by buying games that cost Rs.2000 each? with that money i could easily buy a dual-core comp more than powerful enough to play the latest games. 2.i don't need to go buy expensive Rs.2000 games when i can instead just get free games or many thousands of other great games for way less than 2000.and i have a lot more choice as to what kinds of games i can play.not to mention that i can even develop my own games. 3.with a pc there is so much more u can do than with a console. 4.the speed and graphics capabilities of a console are fixed , whereas computers keep changing rapidly and become more advanced every year and thus they can easily outstrip graphics capabilities of consoles in a few years. 5.the xbox 360 has only a pitiful 512 MB of RAM(and i beg ur pardon if what i just said was wrong) compared to modern systems which can hold upto 8GB of RAM.so pc's can have very highly detailed graphics. 6.i can just easily buy a usb joystick(which i have already done) and use it in my comp and i get force feedback also.so that excuse falls flat on it's face.

Well heres my counter to you friend: 1)Pc gaming is costly:20000 is rather cheap for a quality gaming experience in my opinion and spending a lakh and a half for a brand new pc with a 8gb of ram or a brand new graphics card is simply not worth it as i)Cross platform games will play the same and may even look the same if not better on consoles and any difference in visuals is rather minor. ii)Since you didn't know this let me brighten your horizons by adding that you can play ripped games on a xbox 360.If you need more evidence on this simply go to plug ins in vashi and take a look. 3)Now we know that console gaming is cheaper and worth every bit of the cost inspite of the fact that our government has levied an atrocious tax rate which prevents any worthwhile technological offering to reach the mainstream consumer.Pc gaming hardware is costly and you may even need to upgrade your rig every now and then a new groundbreaking game comes up.In contrast all games built for a particular console platform will run on it . 2)Pc gaming is buggy and you are always going to need patches to fix problems due to games being released too early or dude to the fact the developers don't have the time to test out hardware for flaws due to imappropriate release dates and due to variable hardware on each consumer which means that even if you do have a top of the shelf rig you're not going to get games optimized for it.However all consoles have the same hardware so developers can test their software on it and fix any bugs well before the release date which translates to that you are never ever gonna need patches to fix software related bugs in a game. There is alwyas xbox live for updates and extra content. 3)Let me also educate you a bit more regarding the hardware approach on consoles i)Console gaming hardware is related to the fact that all the resources are devoted to one sole purpose:gaming, which is why even 256 mb of ram is a lot on a console since its built for a partciular task .This is not the case in a pc as your pc is built for other genral tasks and most your pc resources will be spent on doing random other tasks unrelated to gaming. ii)Console hardware is unique since its for built from ground up for gaming only and there are certain things you can do on a console which aren't possible on a pc.I"ll let you knw some unique things about console hardware if you want to know. iii)Since developers know the hardware of a console inside out they can create spectacular games for it with amazing effects eg motor storm, gow and make the most efficent use of the resources available and 512 mb of ram is quite a lot from a developers perpective. iv)In a pc there are lot of variables and developers havs to set a certain set of minimum requirements for a game to work on and developers base their games more on gpus rather than cpus and the ram a system has.In other words the developement approach for a pc is different from a console and most games depend heavily o the gpu(hence the requirement for additional ram) v)Yes you can easily buy a usb joystick but it sometimes so happens that a games may require driver updates and patches for a game to work smoothly on a pc controller which happens often and at times the controls simply aren't smooth enough since the developers didn't pay attention to the said game being played with a controller and its really a big pain going around with the pacthes, drivers issues every now and then in my opinion. So your point is really moot. vi)Game developers are always going to attracted to consoles since they are assured of sales with each console unlike a pc where each pc sold does not gurantee sales for developers as most pcs are brought for tasks unrelated to gaming so you will find the more and more interesting games deviating to consoles and only tried and tested games beig on pcs vii)The good part about pc gaming is undeniably is open ended nature, unlimited mods there are a lot of other things you can do on a pc.However I would say consoles offer a better experience as far as gaming goes.

Where is he getting the whole PC gaming is dying crap. The game lineup for the PC in 2007 is the strongest its been for years, and with DX 10 available giving designers a lot more freedom in game developing. I cant understand that Navneet Prakash at all and I would'nt want any of those console games he suggested for the PC.

The best part is since console hardware is the same throughout its cycle the game developers can actually test their software and iron out all the bugs so that you have a smoother experience and you're never gonna need patches at all and you're never going to have to upgrade your drivers or fiddle with your machine since the sys requirements don't match or go in for that swanky new gfx card which could cost as much as a console itself and the money could be better spent on games or pehraps booze .Moreover there are new maps and expansion maps constantly being released on live and developers can add more content perdiodically as well.

I understand the grouches of Console Gamers vs PC's but I need to put in my two bits for the PC. Console Titles are galore but non-piratable and non-moddable. Any title ported to a PC lacks the finish of the orignal because of the diverse universe of PC configurations available. It's also true that PC games are made to serve the lowest common (& viable) denominator of these available configurations. 1. However a PC is so general so as to emulate all possible consoles available. If you want proof email me the name of your console and I'll show you where that specific emulator is available. 2. Any title made for the Console is emulable on the PC. And sadly the reverse doesnot apply. 3.Please donot forget that a Console is made specifically for gaming. When the typical Indian middleclass family decides to go for an purchase where the options are Console vs PC which does it go for. Trust me the PC always wins. Gaming is percieved as a non-value adding activity and is almost always dropped if not combined with the various uses of a PC. 4.Emulated PC gaming is not for the faint hearted but the kind of hardware and software knowledge and the experience a person gains is definitely worth it. I myself have a PS1 console and that is a headache to play with because of it's limited capabilities, I considered upgrading to a PS2 and now a PS3 but now I have emulators and a fast rig so who needs the damn consoles. Conclusion: I feel Console gaming is for people who are solely focussed on Out of the Box gaming. PC gaming is a superset of all gaming. RTS, FPS, Horror, MMORPG,Racers, Mystries, SCIFI. I'd like to play them all and I have my PC to do it. It's my loyal steed and my sole weapon to conquerse the Gaming Multiverse. Thank you PC. adamsteele9@gmail.com

But the only thing good in consoles is that they are future proof But only for gamers. I mean you cant program graphics on a console can you?
rohith10
,Thiruvananthapuram, on Apr 28, 2007 12:22 AM
Consoles AREN'T future proof. One time or the other, they'll have to make way for newer ones, like the PS2 had to for the PS3. The only thing is that they take time to move on, while as the PC moves on every day, virtually!
Ashish
,mumbai, on Apr 29, 2007 01:38 AM
The xbox 360 does actually offer utilities to program software for games.A console has a 5 year life span so they are built using the best available technology. For example a ps3 is literally a processing powerhouse and the xbox 360 has features that can compare with any present high end pc except for direct x 10 capabilities....however since a consoles hardware does not change during its lifespan developers can optimize games for a console and create amazing visuals.eg:halo looked great despite the fact that the xbox had decidedly inferion hardware compared to most pcs. In contrast computers are chaotic pieces of work and each user has different system requiremnets, memory, processing power and so on so developers have to ensure that games run on even low end pcs available in the market.
rohith10
,Thiruvananthapuram, on Apr 25, 2007 11:29 PM
How ignorant. PC gaming will never die, because the technology that drives it is constantly evolving and becoming mainstream at the same time. Consoles will have to wait till 4 or 5 years till they get a major upgrade, but your very own PC's graphics and sound gets better every 6-months or so. Also, let me add that it is in fact people like you who are spreading the fallacy that PC gaming is dying, because ask any true PC gamer and he will say why he'll stick to his PC for years to come. PCs are moddable and so are games that are available on it. The truckloads of mods that are available for the PC give PC games infinite replayability. Hardcore gamers prefer PC while casual gamers and people wanting an out-of-the-box experience will go for a Console. While I do agree that some of the games listed here should be ported to the PC, I do not agree with any of the authors viewpoints on "PC gaming is dying". And, Console gaming is cheaper? Has the author actually bought original games for playing on his console? I don't think so. Ignorant, actually. I hope Techtree will be more vigilant in the future before letting authors convey such ignorance through articles.

Its true that a lot of developers are moving towards the next gen consoles.Moreoever these consoles are rather difficult to mod so piracy is a non issue. In time the best gaming titles will be seen on consoles rather than the pc.Thats not to say pc gaming is dying since pc games will always evolve and titles such as crysis will only raise the bar for gaming. However the console is a machine that has been built from ground up for gaming and off late offers more and more features to make it a complete media centre hub.Moroever consoles are rather cheap as you can get a console like the microsoft xbox 360 for a price of 19k(core version) .I would say that a console is the best option if you would like to go in for a complete no hassles kind of gaming and you're never going to need to tweak your bios, update your graphic card drivers or have your system crash just because your rig doesn't meet the sys requirements for a game.Ultimately a console brings about a uniform platform for just about everyone especially while online gaming as you can expect everyone to use the same configuration and controller as you.Gaming on a console never felt his real! Pc gaming does have its advantages in the sense you can run pirated games, specialized hardware or run scripts during that session of counter strike so that you can ruin your opponents gaming experience.I have been gaming for nearly 14 years and frankly I am sick of upgrading my rig every time a new game comes up.So glad the xbox 360 came along.I am really not worried about the original games part since I know where to source these free of cost.

completely disagree....console games should NEVER, i repeat NEVER be adapted to the pc, coz if its made for a console, its for a reason...and more often than not, theres zillions of bugs and control issues...one example...resident evil 4....best ever GC game...they make it for the pc, and it doesnt have mouse support....whats the point of aiming with the numpad?? pc games are adaptable to a console, the converse does not apply...

You're absolutely right on that one. Konami ported Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance to the PC. If you want to see the most stupid console to PC port in history, the MGS2 port is a textbook example.

whatever happens, i dont think that any console can come close to PC Gaming... i've had my hands on PS2, XBOX and other stuff but i never feel like home unless im playing on a PC and im sure quite a few people feel that way im sure. like PC GUY said you cant enjoy tweaking your hardware on a console so im sure that PC gaming would never die as long as the new models of Graphics cards. processors and RAMS keep coming out!

PC gaming will never die. PC gamers get that extra kick by 'tweaking' their PCs for faster and faster frame rates, overclocking their cpus, rams and their graphic cards. This kick, fun, romance with their hardware can never be had from dull gaming consoles. Add to that the reasons others have mentioned - its safe to say that PC gaming is here to stay.

If PC gaming is on decline, why nVidia, ATI still introducing better hardware and you are reviewing it. Consoles are only for entertainment. You can play and watch movies on that. If you work and play on leisure time, i.e. gaming is only 2nd preference, then PC is for you.

U miss DMC..Pc game will never die if games like AOE series,Total War,THe Sims,C&C,Commandos are comming out, have to play the demo of the latest C&C,,whereas games like GOW,DMC,WWE series,Tekken series,Grandtourismo, burnout series feels great in console due to superb control mechanism and brilliant design..PC and console will entertain gamers side by side.
