China is freshly cracking the whip against online porn, according to an Associated Press (AP) report.

The Chinese government, convinced that online pornography is perverting the country's young minds, is embarking on a six-month long campaign to target cyber strip shows and sexually explicit images, stories, audio and video clips.

The clean-up drive will also target illegal online lotteries and contraband trade, fraud and 'content that spreads rumors, and is of a slanderous nature,' according to Zhang Xinfeng, Chinese Deputy Public Security Minister.

"The boom of pornographic content on the Internet has contaminated cyberspace and perverted China's young minds," Zhang was quoted as saying by the Xinhua news agency.

With an Internet population of nearly 137 million people, China comes second only to the US.

The Communist Government has time and again asserted its position that Internet will be used for education and business purposes only. When it comes to accessing obscene or subversive material, Internet will be effectively blocked.

However, despite repeated attempts to throttle the rising tide of porn sweeping across China's online millions, in one of the biggest cases yet, in November last year, one Chen Hui was sentenced to life imprisonment for hosting a Web site with over 9 million pornographic images and over 600,000 registered users.

Beijing's Reformatory for Juvenile Delinquents has even gone on record to say that nearly 33.5 percent of its detainees were under the influence of violent online games or erotic Web sites at the time of committing crimes including robbery and rape...
