On 'Patch Tuesday' yesterday, Microsoft released four security patches, plugging flaws in Windows and the Content Management server.

Of the four patches, three are rated 'critical,' plugging highest threat ranking holes in the Windows Client Server Run-Time Subsystem, Microsoft Agent, and Plug and Play services. These holes can be used by hackers to install malicious code on PCs. Whereas, the fourth fix is for a security flaw in Microsoft's Content Management Server software, which is a business application.

Apart from these, Microsoft issued an 'important' security update for a flaw in Windows, perceived as a somewhat lesser threat than others. In any case, the update will prevent hackers from taking over a PC by gaining high-level system privileges.

Significantly, Microsoft has corrected some of the problems caused by last week's emergency patch for .ani animated cursor files. The company has re-released a hotfix for that patch, which takes care of the ElsterFormular, TUGZip, and CD-Tag software problems associated with it. The hotfix can be downloaded through Microsoft's various automatic update services.

And, Microsoft has released a new version of its Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool as part of the upgrades.

Yesterday's patches can be downloaded from the Microsoft security Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/security.
