Reportedly for the first time, Google has made it's desktop tool available for Mac users, with the release of Google Desktop for Mac.

According to the search giant, although Mac OS X comes with its own search software called Spotlight, Desktop for Mac features only complement Mac OS X 10.4 features. Desktop for Mac utilizes any Spotlight plug-ins that users have on their PCs, eliminating the need for developers to rewrite plug-ins specifically for Google.

Google says using Desktop for Mac is kind of like launching a widget, without the need to get into the dashboard. Simply tapping the 'Command' key twice brings up a small search window. As soon as the user starts typing, Google starts showing results - the last 10 search items matching the query.

In case the user does not find the correct search item, then he/she can click the link at the bottom of the list to view all results from the desktop, or search the Web with the same string. Selection of either of these options opens the default browser, and helps find appropriate results through a page that looks exactly like the Google search page on the Web.

A Google representative said that during an integrated search, the content on a PC is not sent to Google. The representative also said that Google does not see or record Desktop results, without the user's permission. Further, Desktop for Mac helps users find misplaced or deleted files.

Meanwhile, the current version of Google Desktop for Mac does not come with Google Gadgets, although the company said this would be included in a later version.
