Apparently, Apple will be forced to delay the release of its forthcoming "Leopard" operating system for Mac.
According to the reports doing the rounds, Apple will be forced to delay the release of its forthcoming "Leopard" operating system for Mac in order to ensure Windows Vista compatibility in the OS's Boot Camp software.
Available for the current iteration of OS X as beta software, Boot Camp is an Apple utility that enables Intel based Mac users to launch and run Microsoft OS, enhancing the Mac's flexibility.
Reportedly, the launch of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, which was originally scheduled for April this year, is now expected to get delayed until October.
Earlier this week, Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, had told clients that the new OS is expected to ship in mid-April.
But now reports indicate that this delay is solely in order that Apple can boost market share by attracting Windows switchers. In contradiction to this, Apple had earlier released a statement in this regard, in which the company promised to release the new OS this spring.
The recent reports further state that developers who work closely with the company are of the view that the Leopard OS is not yet ready, and no final build is circulating right now. And as it takes a few weeks to print CDs or DVDs containing the OS for distribution, the lack of a Gold Master build makes it unlikely that Apple will be able to meet the April deadline.
However, Apple has not yet released any comments on this speculation going on in the industry.
Aside from Apple strongly denying the rumor on the record, the notion is absurd. I can't see Jobs waiting 1/2 year just for Vista compatability in Leopard.
Macs being able to run Windows is more an afterthought... like a free side salad with your steak dinner. If Vista compatibility was an issue, Leopard can be easily and smartly released with XP compatibility certified and Vista "coming soon" via free update.
Additionally, I have a hunch there won't be too many Vista users looking to buy a Mac. They will be like me... people looking for a new computer and wanting the benefits, features and power of Mac OS X. Being able to run a couple occassional Windows apps on the same machine vs. going to my old PC is a minor, added convenience.
keep up to date with your Mac info; by the time you published this article, the "Apple to hold back Leopard?" story had sailed, and Apple had released a statement saying Leopard will be released as planned. Check Engadget or TUAW if you need more recent news.
Talk about backward slow reporting...
Apple has already released a statement that Leopard is up for release in the spring with no delay. And anyway, what a claptrap idiotic reason for delaying an OS that is miles ahead of anything Microsoft can produce.
