With all the speculation about a Google phone, incidentally being seen as a rival to Apple Computer's iPhone, there are now reports that Google is, instead, developing software to run on mobile phones.

According to Gene Munster, an industry analyst, Google is developing software to run services on mobile phones rather than building its own phone. This is in line with what several industry sources say.

In his research note to clients, Munster said that Google appears to be building software for Web search on mobile phones and for location-finding services to work with iPhone and other mobile phones. And, it seems, Google is working with, and not against, Apple Computer.

Apparently, a Google spokesperson had earlier said that mobile is an important area for the company and that they remain focused on creating applications, and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for users worldwide. But that there is nothing further to announce.

Meanwhile, Google has always been surrounded by rumors and speculation, many of which have turned out wrong. Once again, the Google Phone rumor has been dismissed to be followed by another new one - that the company is coming up with mobile software.

Let's just wait and watch, and see how far this one goes.
