Apple Computer has reportedly started shipping its much awaited Apple TV, a device that allows users play music, photos, and video stored on a computer on the television screen.

Apple TV is designed to work with Apple's iTunes digital jukebox that runs on either Macintosh or Windows computers, thus giving users access to more than 400 movies, 50 hours video, 350 TV shows, over 4 million songs, 5000 music videos, 25,000 photos, and myriad podcasts plus audio books.

Apple TV connects to a TV via an HDMI port or component video and audio ports. Its built-in superfast 802.11 wireless capability syncs users' iTunes libraries from any Mac or PC in the house. And most importantly, if a user changes his library in iTunes, the change automatically gets reflected on Apple TV wirelessly.

The device comes with a remote control that lets users watch movies or TV shows bought from Apple's iTunes store or view photo slide shows or listen to music.

This is Apple's first foray into consumers' living rooms, and many other products extending that reach are waiting in the pipeline, according to sources.

Meanwhile, Apple TV is shipping in the US this week onwards at Apple's online store, retail stores, and through resellers at $299 (Rs 13,061) approximately.

The suite includes Wondershare DVD to Apple TV Ripper and Wondershare Video to Apple TV Converter. The Video to Apple TV Converter lets you easily and quickly convert all popular video formats like AVI, MPG, MPEG,... http://www.appletvconverter.net/

From my experiences with the Roku Photobridge I am anxious to own one of these. The video quality on the photobriidge was better than DVD thanks to networking protocols prevailing over a laser read for ensuring all ones and zero's will get there. This should be the same but with a 40 gig drive to boot and hdmi support. I am not format loyal so long as I can convert all incoming formats to something that will work with appletv. I find that buying the whole season of shows I like and hte movies I like is less money than a cable subscription and is of better quality. Back it up to a dvd and feel safe that it is there for the future. I would prefer a quiet appletv without a fan over a media center for this and many other reasons including simplicity, no noise, ease of use and elegance to name a few. I am a certified home theater installer and I believe this is the best 300 one can spend on home entertainment

How incompetent are you... pcs do not NEED fans i have a media pc under my couch and it makes less sound than your pc's harddrive. all you need is a passive cooler, fan less cpu and linux o and if your like me and don't like noisy drives try external fire wire or Ethernet drives

Exactly. It's the "u lol jk omfg rly?" crowd that will eat this up . Those of us with half a brain left might just save the money and use a console or old computer. I could care less what suckers spend their money on. Just don't expect the rest of us to feed the hype.

The worst thing about owning an Apple is having to tell your dad you're gay. On the positive note, the only virus that Mac users are afraid of is AIDS...

So how'd your dad take the news when you bought an apple?

This device does nothing new. For $300 you can buy an xbox/ps3/tivo and get the same features (viewing PC content on your TV) plus a crap load more - e.g. video games, internet access DVD player, etc). For $30 you can ugrade your PC to enable DVMI/S-Video/Surround Sound to work with your entertainment system. I see no value for this device.

A computer on a T.V. screen? This is nothing more than a Nintendo Wii with the gaming capabilities removed and the Apple logo taped on top.

A network enabled box with tv-out? That locks you into using itunes? Amazingly enough, there are still some out there that would just as soon avoid that piece of DRM-laden bloatware. Want a use for your old Apple, Windows, or Linux PC? Add a tv-out card for like $15 if it doesnt already have one and you can watch any media in any format over your network. Putting it in a pretty box and charging $300 doesnt change the fact that it's just another way to lock people into itunes and their itunes store.

I can't wait, as a user of both pc and Mac, i know a Mac product will be intuitive and easy to use, I'll leave the PC stuff to the computer geeks that want all the pain in the but bells and whistles to show off, I'd rather plug and play in the least amount of time possible.

Why pay for an over priced media box with proprietory software?!? There are others out there that do more and are cheaper. Yes, the apple looks slick, but I'd rather have function over looks. HiFi toys should be black or silver, Not white.

Can anyone recommend a better, cheaper solution? Perhaps even without integrated sofware; just simply a wireless a/v pc-tv solution?

just another money /greed gadget for everyone to yearn for and defer savings thinking I gottahaveitcauseeveryoneelsedoes and they'll think I'm weird because I don't and for couch potatoes to become even more squashier and not get out in the real world and volunteer or make themselves productive somehow? Hope it keeps Mac on the block tho'. Many people mock them and say 'get a real computer'.

$299 for a media centre that plays stuff thats resides on your PC..... XBOX Softmod cost $0 to do so, blow dust off your old XBOX console and save your money, dont believe me look it up.

It looks beautiful of course, but from a functional standpoint, I think that MS Media Center is more effective. The problem with this product is that it does not allow you to watch TV through the box, and therefore to record TV. I think in this case Apple is trying too hard to expand iTunes, and not hard enough to realize the customer's need.
