Picture this: it's a cold winter night, snowing outside (paints a cool picture doesn't it?), now what does an average guy do? Sit by the fire side-drinking with his buddies; cuddle up to his girl friend; sit by the window watching the snowflakes settle and just enjoy some hot chocolate. Winter can be such a sweet affair. Well, unless you are Wayne Holden, the protagonist in the Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions. Wayne usually spends his wintry nights fighting the Akrid in his VS (Vital Suit). Did those terms just whoosh by like a Brett Lee bouncer? (Sorry, it's cricket season!) Let me elaborate.

A Cold Story
In Lost planet, mankind for the umpteenth time is on the brink of destruction and as always, we flee to another planet this time it being E.D.N III. It turns out that the planet wasn't the finest choice for refuge as it is too cold for comfort, add to that a few alien bugs called the Akrid and hence, we're in grave trouble. The humans lose all hope of peace on the planet as they are outnumbered by the Akrid. As the remaining survivors plan to run away yet again, they discover something worth fighting for: a way to survive. Every Akrid bug has a source of natural thermal energy trapped inside him. This energy, known as T-energy is a part of every Akrid bug and as the humans find out that this energy can be used to survive on E.D.N III, so begins a counter attack by the survivors to gain control of the planet.

The story revolves around Wayne Holden, a part of the human counter attack who fights alongside his father, Gale Holden. While on a mission, Gale is killed by Green Eye, a massive Akrid bug. The attack leaves Wayne stranded in his VS, frozen in the snow. He is later rescued by a group of Snow Pirates lead by a guy named Yuri. To make it short, you spend the rest of the game following leads provided by Yuri as you eradicate groups after groups of the Akrid. Your ultimate goal is to eliminate the Green Eye, who is responsible for your father's death. I personally found the story dull and a major con in this masterpiece. But moving on, let's learn a little more about the game play.
