It's widely publicized that depression and dysfunctional lifestyles abound within the confines of the country's elitist educational institutions, the IITs.

While exacting curricula and cut-throat competition can be put down as the usual suspects, IIT Mumbai authorities are busy laying the blame on the Internet...

According to Reuters, starting today, in all 13 hostels of IIT Mumbai, Internet access will be barred between 11pm and 12.30pm in a move to encourage students to sleep early, as also force them out of their 'shells', as Dean of Student Affairs, Prakash Gopalan, describes it.

According to Gopalan, nowadays, students don't even know who lives two doors away from them because they are so busy on the Internet. Students seem to have stopped socializing, and many of them are late for morning lectures, or even sleep through them.

Gopalan says the good old hostel culture of camaraderie and socializing is gone, and that this is not a healthy development in the authorities' opinion.

Not only is there a decline in academic performance, but also in sporting, cultural, and social activities; all because of the Internet.

Meanwhile, the decision has not gone down too well with students, who've till date enjoyed unlimited free Internet access in their hostel rooms.

Student anger is spilling onto blogs run by IIT alumni, and the one sentiment echoed is that they resent their lives are being regulated like this.

One student even mentioned that soon - the authorities might say students need a lullaby to go to sleep...

To add to it, other IITs across the country too are reportedly considering a similar curb on Internet in their hostels.

With stress, competition already taking a toll on IIT students - what with 9 suicides having been reported in the past five years, one hopes a decision like this will augur well for students' mental health.

I think this is a good idea because some foreign students can also learn

It is true that technology has stolen the camaraderie that existed in campus. It is high time to change the evaluation methodology and incorporate some components of group dynamics, social relationship and leadership quality.

Hah! It's always the fault of the new technology. Let me say this now, and I am sure many will concur, limiting the use of internet, won't help. Student's will adapt to the change in rules to keep doing what they love to do. Now, I am sure some people will just blame the internet as the reason to reduced performance of the students in academics. But that's just sidestepping the actual problem. Why do people spend so much time on the internet. The reason is simple it's far more interesting and there are a lot of new experiences out there. Can we say the same about our academics? Unfortunately no. Our academic system, even in the IIT's hasn't been able to keep up with the technical advances that it itself is supposed to perpetrate. The teaching methods are outdated. Most of the professors are not motivated themselves and they cannot motivate their students either. It's the same old story of boring lectures and monotone studies. Can't we do something to make our learning more enriching? Are we thinking on those lines at all? Do we ever try to improve the way we impart education? Our approach to every problem is the same. If more people are doing something they like rather than doing something which they "ought" to do, we just curb people from doing what they like, instead of making the things they "ought" to do more likeable. Sad.

Its true. Socializing is NIL in IIT campuses. Students these days not interested in any soc&cult, lit or sporting activities. Whole day Orkuting and DC. Hope KGP authorities also wake up and place restrictions.

I don't think IITans would waste time on orkut any more than non-IITans.

WELL those who are saying india is democratic..etc etc... mind it...we are not discussing anything of that importance.. ban on net at night...!!thats it.. aree first ask them all what use they do from internet at that time... does iit have banned library or labs??no they have not... students are crying for net bcoz they mustbe usingthem at that time..it itself shows the effect of it... AT THE END OF THE DAY ITS STUDENTS WHO ARE GOING TO GAIN...or atleast they will not loose something....

things will be .. as they r now ...... instead of internet there will be sumthing else /..\ gaming, movies etc. .I personally think that most of the courses in IIT's have failed to generate student's interest .. if nething authorities need to bring in a btr curriculum .....

The move is necessary keeping in mind that the students when they join IIT are all around 16 years, and that age it is very easy to fall prey to unlimited internet access. Only after certain period of time of extensive Internet usage do you realise that lot of constructive work can be done via Internet. But its debatable if the authorities' hand-holding approach is better than "throwing students at the deep end" approach. With maturity, students learn, and they learn the hard way. Also, the parents put enough pressure on IIT system, because they cant afford to lose their bright child to the lure of the Internet.

I don't understand why authorities, administration and faculty always take so pessimistic approach towards students to make something work. It's not just for IITs but for all academic institutes of some or other importance in the country. Is shutting down the internet for some hours is the only solution to this problem? Aren't there other ways tackle this problem? Definitely, it's not but of course it's the easiest! There are n numbers of ways to pull out students out of their rooms but we need to revive and revise the culture which has changed or degraded (no doubt). Both the administration and students need to think other way round!

This is really a great step. I think that it is necessary that we stop the madness of internet-insanity. I think this will be really a nice way forward.

People should leave hand from pe-nis while doing research. Authorities are good at promoting use of keyboards. Research should be done on good things not that exercising internal things

Free Internet provided in IITs are supposed to be used for academic purposes and during the time between '11pm and 12.30pm' lot of research work is done on the internet.Though some people do not utilize the internet properly, most of them have to use the internet for research work. Internet allows to communicate between people across the globe . Also stopping internet between 11 to 12:30 pm will make people wait till 12:30 pm to use the internet .Hence they will stay awake further late in the night and miss the morning classes. Hence this wont solve any problem. What is required some counseling to both professors and students .

********************************* Ahem!!! Well 12.30 pm means afternoon 12.30 not 12.30 am.I doubt anyone will stay awake another 13hrs30mins.Might as well sleep for 10 hrs wake up and then use the net. Frankly I think its a good move.Ppl are getting really addicted to the LAN+Web.

I dont think this is in interests with majority IITians as they are well aware of thye fact tht they go their to groom tobe the best amongst all, And misusing INTERNET will harm their objective , Infact this wil bar them from accessing them use encylopedia of information , wake up guyes

Its not our fault if the professors cant maintain the interest of the students. Its rubbish to say that we dont even know who lives two door away.. Its just that they need someone to blame for their degrading standard..n we r the unfortunate scapegoat ..Firstly, the bikes were banned inside the campus, now the LAN ban..what next ??..

It is worse in IITM. We have network blocked from 1:00AM to 5:00AM. Now they are introducing ADS proxy authentication and even disrupting the local hostel LANs... The 1-5 block was Ok but now I think they are going too far..

What if someone has a family member or relative he needs to chat with at that time? Overall blocking of the facility is stupid. AND WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE CAPTCHA FOR THIS COMMENT?
