Lenovo has recalled nearly 205,000 ThinkPad batteries made by Sanyo Electric, as they could overheat and catch fire.
Headquartered out of North Carolina, Lenovo, in conjunction with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, has issued an advisory saying the lithium-ion extended batteries could overheat - if the laptop is dropped in a certain way, striking the battery on a corner edge.
The recall follows four reports of overheating yet, with a user suffering minor eye irritation in one particular case.
The batteries in question were sold by Lenovo along with new ThinkPad notebook PCs or as optional/replacement batteries for ThinkPad models: R Series (R60 and R60e); T Series (T60 and T60p); and Z Series (Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, and Z61p).
The recalled batteries can be identified by means of part number, FRU P/N 92P1131 to be found on the battery label.
A spokesperson for Lenovo said the problem has been identified, and aggressive steps are being taken to fix it, adding that the defect lies in the joint design (Lenovo and Sanyo) of the battery packs, and not within the battery cells.
Meanwhile, a Sanyo spokesperson too said the problem was triggered by a strong external impact to the batteries, and not by the batteries themselves.
The spokesperson said Sanyo is supporting Lenovo s recall, and has already taken steps towards working together with Lenovo to give first priority to consumer safety.
Customers are advised to stop using the recalled batteries, and contact Lenovo at http://www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram for a free replacement.
Other companies such as Dell, Apple, and Toshiba have earlier faced similar problems - with over 10 million Sony batteries having been recalled.
