The final showdown of the "Animax Grand Gaming Challenge 2007" (AGGC) took place yesterday at the Atria Mall in Mumbai.
The tournament, organized in collaboration with Sify, saw regional winners from the North, South, East, and West zones competing as semi-finalists for the Animax Grand Gaming Trophy and other prizes in several game categories, such as sports, racing, strategy on-line, and first person shooter.
AGGC covered 66 cities, and claims to have received an overwhelming response from not just metros but also smaller cities like Vizag, Velur, Kurukshetra, Faridabad, Allahabad, and Pune.
Elaborating on the same, Pijush Kanti Das, President, Access Media, Sify, said, "We received tremendous response for the Animax Grand Gaming Challenge 2007, with respects to enquiries, registrations, and participation, compared to the tournament held in the year 2006. We received overwhelming response not only from the metro cities, but also from non-metro cites and Tier II cities. This shows that the awareness level has increased, and helps us in widening the existing gaming community. We plan to bring international standards to gaming in India by introducing more MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) and Single Player games elevating the current gaming industry to a new dimension."
Some of the major clans participating in this tournament were ATE, ASSET, LORDS, and SOD. At AGGC, ATE, the winning clan of Gamebox, represented Mumbai in Counter Strike (CS). The other games played in the tournament included FIFA, Need for Speed (NFS), UG2, Defence of The Ancients, and Gunz Online.
Apart from this, other competitions included best game jockey, best corporate gamer, with prizes worth Rs 50 lakhs comprising iPods, gaming cards, hard disks, headphones and mouse sets, calendars, hiking bags, sippers, posters, and DVDs, also a job for some lucky winner as a real game jockey with Sify Gamedrome.
The CS final was won by Clan 'ATE' from West Zone (Mumbai), who got a cheque of Rs 1 lakh; Gunz Online was won by Clan 'Dark Messiah' who got a 19-inch TFT Monitor. The other winners were Satya from South Zone for NFS, Sandeep from North Zone for FIFA, and Clan 'SOD' from South Zone (Chennai) for Defense of The Ancients.
According to Sify, AGGC is an initiative to provide a platform to India's wired generation, recognizing the need to take the passion of today's young gamers to a competitive platform. With research pointing towards the huge potential of the gaming and animation industry in India, AGGC promises to further enhance the gaming scenario in the country from a nascent stage to that of a lifestyle hobby.
