Just recently, Intel developed a 'Tera Research Chip' to deliver supercomputer-like performance while consuming less electricity.
And, it was a team of Indian engineers at the Intel India Development Center (IIDC) in Bangalore that played a key role in the development of this fingernail-sized chip.
The team comprises 20 members, and was led by Vasantha Erraguntla, an Intel veteran, who contributed almost half of the work that went into the chip in terms of logic, circuit and physical design, while the rest was done at the company's other lab located at Oregon.
Talking about the achievement, Erraguntla said it feels great to lead and be part of a team that is contributing to Intel's global innovation and to the future of technology. The capabilities of Indian engineering talent have been established without a doubt.
The 80-core chip is the result of Intel's "Tera-scale computing" research aimed at delivering Teraflops (trillions of calculations per second) performance for future PCs and servers. It is the world's first programmable processor from a single, 80-core chip, using only 62 watts of electricity, less than many single-core processors today.
IIDC was set up in 1998, and is Intel's largest non-manufacturing site outside of the US. Reportedly, Indian engineers at IIDC work on the design of chips and chip sets, reference designs, system software and packaging technologies, and have full ownership of the development of key Intel chips for the server and mobile market.
india contain abundant talent in it... concern of chip... they can make any kind of invention... as they required.. for .. at any matter of time... but.. only one thing is they firm n instintive
Excellent work. You made us feel proud. And also motivated every Indian to step forward and do things that seems to be impossible. Simply gr8 guys. Once again CONGO to you all
congrats! to every one who participated in this, i belive my indians they can do something greater. indians have a lot of power but the thing is they didnt get a chance to prove themselves. many more indian are have a capacity, ability, power but they didnt get a chance. only few people got it.. Thats the people are always proved and showing, thats my indians. for eg Intel team(20)
Indian Govt should encourage such techies and should form a R&D base for such work so that it can hold the patent instead of private company owns the patent
IIDC have designed only the half part of the CHIP, other half is architecture and and high level concepts are done by their US counterparts. No can claim it is India or US brain have done it. Well this is agood example of US/India Parternership at the team level....
Cheers,
Karhtik
As India is stepping forward with all its strenght in IT.....its just the begining. The world will see what we are.Its really great to be an Indian.Hats off to the team who developped such a thing.
Its is time that Intel India's long term business plan is finalized and clear roadmap laid to play crucial part in Intel's technology and product development roadmap. Let us reap the benefit of Indian techno-preneur attitude to the benefit of Intel to regain its market place dominance
It is really amazing, that our indians out performed in this fashion in contributing their effort which resulted to get a maximum output and proved that indians can achieve the highest horizons in any field, i am very much proud of the team in india.
It is not late to for us now to change India into a super computer hub-nation inthe world. More than half century ago we missed this chance when Mr. Sanjeeva Rao was union Minister for Technology for developement of chip making as a cottage industry India. I am proud to be an Indian and we all must encourage new talent especilly in the computer field. Wake up politicians.

Yea but lets have a little party that at least some of the Indian fellas here are also doing cutting edge work. But yea I agree that world has not been won as projected.
indian reaches moon, indian develops fastest processor, bla bla bla.
its like that joke where brains from different nations assemble an indigenous machinery and when the time comes for Indian to contribute, he writes "MADE IN INDIA" on the contraption.
"indians have the ink, but west provides the canvas to paint on"
and govt is still sleeping.
sad :(
I agree ..Our time is now. Congrats Intel India Team. It proves that even people out sode india are doing great work to make feel India Proud of its own sons. Great Going....So world will see India coming up from every corner...
I heard that such a protoype processor would be released after 5 years, but its already out now.May be we can see that in desktop computing , 3 years down the line
