Wal-Mart is reportedly all set to launch it's online movie store.
The beta version of the store is scheduled for launch today. It is expected to start with selling about 3,000 films and episodes of popular television shows.
The content will come from all major studios and some TV networks, including Fox Broadcasting. Initially, some content from ABC, CBS, and NBC will not be available for sale. However, more shows from these networks will be added in the near future.
The older titles will start selling at $7.50 (Rs 330) and the new releases will be charged somewhere between $12.88 (Rs 568) and $19.98 (Rs 881).
However, Wal-Mart doesn't plan on allowing users to rent movies online. The movies can be played on a PC or transferred to Microsoft Windows Media compatible portable digital players. But the downloads will not work on Apple PCs or iPods.
Users will also not be able to burn movies bought from Wal-Mart onto a DVD. Although the company has plans to make the option available by the end of the year.
With Internet downloading expected to generate an annual revenue of about $4 billion, with that from DVD rentals and sales pegged at $27 billion, the new option is likely to be quite profitable for Wal-Mart.
Other players in the online movie market include Amazon with its Unbox video rental and download store; Movielink, owned by five studios and CinemaNow; and of course, Apple iTunes.
This is the dumbest thing I ever heard. WHy would I pay 12.88 for a DVD, when I can buy it for a coiple of dollars more and own it for life. Thanks but no thanks.
