As a part of it's global initiative to educate the student community and prepare them for careers in design, Autodesk has partnered with the National Institute of Design (NID) and established the "Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Digital Innovation" and a Research Chair for "Design Education Innovation" at the institute.

Under this partnership, Autodesk is providing the Institute with a grant of about Rs 1 crore which includes sponsorship of the Chair and research projects, shared cost of setting up the Centre of Excellence, and the cost of Autodesk software being offered to the Institute.

The Research Chair will focus on developing innovative design curriculum and pedagogy to be offered across multiple-tiers of the education system to spread design literacy and explore joint research projects between the two. It will also assist students and faculty for advanced research in the areas of "next design directions" and design education.

The Centre of Excellence initiative comprises 3 state-of-the-art design labs at NID's - Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bangalore campus. All campuses would be equipped with the latest versions of the company's design software such as Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Electrical, and ALIAS Design tools.

Speaking on the initiative, Richard Jones, Vice President-Product Development, Manufacturing Solutions, Autodesk said, "Over the years, India has emerged as a prime destination for high-end design and engineering work. As the Indian design industry experiences significant growth, one needs to build a system through which educational institutions across India can help develop skilled design professionals. Autodesk's tie-up with NID is a big step in that direction."

Adding to it further, Darlie O. Koshy, Director, National Institute of Design & Executive Board Member ICSID said, "The CoE and Chair intend to provide a platform of international standards for Indian designers and design engineers. This initiative is integral to the partnership that Autodesk and NID are embarking upon to realize their common vision of Strategic Design and Creativity for increased competitiveness and better quality of life".

Apart from this, Autodesk has recently launched its Global Student Engineering and Design Community portal (http://students.autodesk.com) aiming at providing students access to the latest 3D design technologies.
