    Bharti Airtel to Debut DTH Services

    Among other announcements, Bharti Airtel has evinced interest in the commencement of DTH services to address the fast growing home entertainment segment.

According to sources, Bharti Airtel has said it will hive off its towers for mobile communications, and related passive infrastructure to a wholly owned subsidiary to achieve enhanced operational efficiencies.

The company has approved the scheme of transfer of towers to a subsidiary, to operate under the name of "Bharti Infratel". Bharti Airtel reportedly currently owns 30,000 towers, with the figure expected to scale upwards to around 40,000 over the next one year.

With Conditional Access System (CAS) being implemented in major metros across the country, and with the hotting-up of competition between CAS and DTH (Direct-to-Home), Bharti Airtel has evinced interest in the commencement of DTH services to address the fast growing home entertainment segment. This will be done via its wholly-owned subsidiary, Bharti Telemedia.

The company has also announced the acquisition of a submarine network cable system from Network i2i, which is jointly owned by Singtel and a Bharti group company, by way of purchase of all the assets or equity for an overall consideration of $110 million, subject to obtaining the requisite approvals.
