Market Analyst, NPD, has released preliminary estimates for sales of Gen-Next video gaming consoles through the 2006 holiday season.

As per these estimates, Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the best selling game console in the US - through the holiday shopping season from November till December 25, 2006.

Nearly 2 million Xbox 360 consoles were sold in North America during this period.

Coming in a close second was Nintendo's Wii, which sold around 1.8 million units through the holiday season.

This is especially significant, considering that the Wii was launched not before November 19, which means that the sales figures are quite impressive for Nintendo.

Sony's PlayStation 3, which launched on November 17, came in a distant third, with approximately only 750,000 units sold from November through Christmas day.

While lack of supply is being cited as the primary reason for Sony's poor performance, it would be well to point out that both the Wii and the PS3 were difficult to find through the holiday season.

And, Microsoft more than made up for these shortfalls. At any given point of time, there were more Xbox 360 consoles on store shelves than there were Wiis or PS3s available.

So, while shoppers scrambled to get the consoles of their choice, they opted for the next best thing when they could not find what they were looking for.

Complete Sales figures for the 2006 holiday season would be released by NPD sometime later this month.

XBOX 360 will only increase its lead as software developers learn to fully utilize its hardware. There have been many reports of excessive complexity in writing games for the PS3 and it is therefore unlikely that, as impressive as the hardware specs are, the games will benefit. Oh, and don't forget about a little thing called "Halo 3". Chris

I'm sorry, but this information is shit. Xbox360 isn't the next best thing on the shelf. It is the BEST console on the market. It is my opinion that XBOX360 is a little better than Wii, and is FAR better than PS3...but I want to know the real numbers, and not some shmucks opinion with fake numbers.

You should not put a comma between market analyst and NPD in your lede, nor should you put one after NPD. A good way to figure it out is to ask yourself `if the name or description between commas was removed, would the sentence still make sense? In this case, "Market analyst has released preliminary estimates..." does not make sense. It should be "Market analyst NPD has released" or "A market analyst, NPD, has released..." Just sayin'.

According to an NPD spokesperson, the only data they've released os for Nov, 2006, sales. Why are you trying to spin the Xbox as a leader? Are you getting Xboxes from MS like they give out laptops for Vista bloggers?

This is true, NPD has not released any data regarding the console sales for Dec. 2006 (release date for this is next week). The whole XBox wins thing is some idoit who misreported the NPD findings and news spread like wildfire with media not checking sources.

NPD just released info that it has not released any data except for November's data. So this jump on the XBOX is premature. I stopped at an EB and they said the only interests they had were PS3 and Wii. They had over 2 dozen XBOX 360s there and noone was buying them.

I know... I couldn't find a Wii anywhere. And I'd never buy a 360. Microsoft probably paid for this advertisement. ;) -

I got a 360. It has Ipod/mp3 player intergration, Xbox Live, TV, movie, and game downloads. This 360 thing is awesome. Plus HD gaming its going to be tough to be this monster. Xbox 360 rules go get one.

Not a big deal since the xbox was the only game system in any of the stores I went to.

I agree, people don't buy consoles because the one they realy want is out of stock at the time, thats just dumn. The PS3 is still either an overpriced gaming console or an underpriced media system, if you have an HD TV of any kind the PS3 is an amazing deal. The XBOX 360s are probably your best otherwise, great price on either version (I would get the premium if I planed online gaming due to the free headset, wireless controller and hard drive, by far the better "deal" if you can afored it, though after the cost of Xbox Live you would actualy end up spending less getting either PS3 as they offer free online play). The wii is perfect if you have a small child or simply want to wow your friends with some of the funner minigames, as a console...its a zelda box and honistly if Zelda is what you buy it for its cheaper to simply get it on the game cube. The wii though does make a great minigame box, a warioware or marioparty will realy make the system worth a buy, if you can affored buying 3 more controllers AND nunchuks.

It is unlikely that buyers considered XBOX 360 the "next best thing " ....especially given that PS3 and Wii were competing against Gears of War on Xbox 360 which was released for the 2006 holiday season.
