New Year's Eve saw five party capitals; Hong Kong, Mumbai, Berlin, Rio, and New York playing host to five spectacular events in a bid to live up to Nokia's promise of ringing in the new year with the biggest bash across the globe.
Nokia's New Year Eve kick-started at Hong Kong's Ocean Terminal with Atomic Kitten staging hits - Whole Again and Tide Is High amidst enthralling performances by local stars; DJ Jamaster A, Eason Chan, Grasshopper, Hacken Lee, Joey Yung, Josie Ho, Jun Kung, Paul Wong, Soler and Twins.
In Mumbai, the Andheri Sports Complex saw Grammy Award winner, Nelly Furtado, performing two Hindi songs, Kabhi Kabhi and Yeh Sama, in addition to her international hits, Powerless, Maneater, and I am like a Bird. Music maestro A R Rahman debuted his first English language composition titled, Pray for Me, Brother, an anthem for the eradication of world poverty. Others who dazzled on stage were Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor, and Koena Mitra.
Moving across to Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, which saw approximately 1.2 million party animals sway to the tunes of the Scissor Sisters who performed hit singles, I Don't Feel Like Dancin' and Comfortably Numb.
Berlin ushered-in the new year with a dazzling pyrotechnics display that lit up the skies.
And, while it looked like the rain would put a dampener on the celebrations in Rio de Janeiro, over a million people descended upon the Ipanema Beach to ring-in the new year in style. The Black Eyed Peas performed hits Where is the Love? and Pump. Other performers included: John Legend, Brazilian music legend - Sergio Mendes, and local artists Funk'n Lata and DJ Marlboro.
Finally, over to New York, which saw the culmination of Nokia's New Year Eve with rocking performances by Rihanna, Ludacris, and KT Tunstall in "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2007".
Each event turned out to be more than just a celebration of music. Reportedly, Nokia was offering music lovers innovative ways to use their mobile phones, including an opportunity to send messages that were displayed on screens around each stage throughout the night.
The party hoppers were given a chance to send messages to other Nokia New Year Eve cities, as also use Bluetooth "beam-zones" on site to receive free content such as wallpapers, links, gig guides, ringtones, etc.
For those who could not watch their favorite artists in person, performances from the five events were made available as a global television broadcast, as also online at www.nokianewyearseve.com.
Nokia said the estimated total television and Internet audience for its New Year Eve celebration across five cities was over 150 million.
