Moser Baer has announced the launch of a new initiative in content distribution, foraying into the entertainment industry through the home video market.
The company said that in order to help curb piracy, it has entered the market with DVDs and VCDs, which are priced at Rs 34 and Rs 28 respectively. Currently, DVDs and VCDs are priced between Rs 200 to Rs 600, and Rs 100 to Rs 200 respectively.
Moser Baer will release video content on DVD and VCD formats using its proprietary and patented technology, which enhances quality and in turn reduces cost significantly. The company will be creating content in edutainment and devotional categories as 'made-for-DVD-films'. Besides, mainstream Hindi movies will also be a part of the company's plan.
In a statement, Ratul Puri, Executive Director of Moser Baer, said that the pre-recorded movie market in India is pegged at Rs 550 crores, and is poised to grow over five times in the next few years. Puri said it was a logical step for them to enter into the home video segment. They will have a disruptive content distribution model via which they will use, replicate, and distribute content. Content creation will be looked at only in the beginning of the next fiscal year.
It is learnt that the company's new division is in discussions to acquire copyrights and exclusive licenses of more than 7,000 titles in all major Indian languages, which comprises a third of all movies produced till date in India.
Harish Dayani, Chief Executive Officer of Entertainment Business, Moser Baer, explained that their goal by end 2007 is to own exclusive copyright licenses of 40 percent mainstream Hindi films ever produced in this country. By end of 2008, they expect the figure to reach 50 per cent. They will also be looking at buying copyrights of as many new films that are released.
Dayani further added that this initiative is poised to bring a paradigm change in the home video market, which they believe will lead to much higher consumption of content on home video, and encourage people to build libraries.
According to Moser Baer, the new initiative will release titles in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi languages.
The company is also looking at having a presence in the home video market in countries that are suffering high levels of piracy.
