The total GSM subscriber base in India has crossed the 100 million mark in November, making it the third highest GSM subscribing country after China and Russia.
The country has added 5 million new subscribers in the month of November, even surpassing the addition of 4.7 million new subscribers in October.
According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), this places India in the super-elite club of countries boasting over 100 million GSM subscribers well ahead of expectations.
In terms of the global GSM subscriber base, this places India third after China and Russia. While China had 401.7 million GSM subscribers in November 2006, Russia had 152.2 million, and India 100.7 million.
In a statement, T V Ramachandran, Director General of COAI, said, "GSM has been the primary engine of growth in telecom in India, and will continue to be the major contributor to growth in tele-density in the coming years. We will overtake Russia in the first quarter of 2007, the way we are moving. And I won't be surprised if we add 10 million every month in 2007 if the GSM roll out plan of BSNL is implemented."
"The GSM industry and COAI are delighted at the achievement of the 100 million milestone. This sharp spurt in overall mobile growth is due to forward looking policies of the ministry and enabling regulation," Ramachandran said.
As per data compiled by COAI, November's record growth was led by Bharti Airtel, which added over 1.65 million new users during the month. In turn, Airtel's subscriber base increased 5.77 percent to cross the 30 million mark.
Hutchison Essar recorded the second-largest growth with the addition of a little over 1 million new users, taking its total base to 22.2 million, up from 21.2 million in October 2006. Whereas, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) came at third position with an addition of a little under a million new subscribers in November.
