Vista? Not necessary

Vista? Not necessary

Punit Lodaya, Nov 22, 2006 1700 hrs IST

I heard a network admin say that to a Microsoft representative.

"Vista? Not necessary." These were the words that came out of a network administrator's mouth, while having a conversation with some Microsoft representative, who was persuading him to upgrade to Microsoft Vista. All this time, I was going gaga over Microsoft Vista on how cool it looks; how easy it is to install; and boasting about all its upcoming features. But, after hearing those words, I really gave it a practical thought; how will Microsoft Vista be more useful than Microsoft Windows XP????

Let's get back in the time wheel, shall we? Every newer version of Windows boasts enough features, in a way, compelling any Windows user to upgrade to the latest one. Windows became popular with the introduction of Windows 95. Soon, Windows 98 replaced it with enough features to boast about, and then came the dreaded Windows ME, which Microsoft itself never took very seriously. It was just to bridge the gap between the release of Windows 98 and the upcoming NT-based OS for the desktop.

Come October 2001, Windows XP became finally available to everyone; some of them even managed to get hold of it even a month earlier than that. And for once, it was the biggest upgrade anyone could ever imagine. The instability issues with Windows 9X range were almost eliminated; the computer didn't crash for every single reason and I got rid of the cumbersome process of installing Windows 98 every 3-4 days. For the first time, my OS could run at a stretch for 6 months non-stop working 24*7 without any signs of slowing down. Obviously, Windows XP did cost me a bit as I had to upgrade from 128 MB to 256 MB, but it was worth it. Initially, Windows XP had lots of security problems, but then it was at least more secure than Windows 9X series. With the release of service packs and now, the monthly release of critical patches, Windows XP is close to being a perfect OS, at least for me.

Microsoft Vista is here finally (at least, the RTM version), but we have just realized that right now; except for a gamer, there's no need for anyone else to upgrade. There have been minor updates, but not worth the price one has to pay for the new OS and of-course, the hardware cost. It boasts about cool and sleek looks, but frankly speaking, does a corporate need the cool looks? It boasts of high security. Well, update your Windows XP with the latest patch and have the security centre running in background, and you will be the proud owner of one of the most secure PCs around. It boasts of new applications with newer features. Internet Explorer 7.0, Windows Media Player 11, Windows Defender, Windows Desktop Search, etc, have all been released for Windows XP as well. It boasts of widgets. We have Yahoo! Widgets which even betters the competitor. The interface might have turned easier, but over the period of five years, people have learnt using Windows XP so well that using Vista will be like spoon-feeding them.

The biggest competitor to Windows Vista is not Mac OS X or Ubuntu Linux. It is Windows XP itself. If DirectX 10 had not been mandatory for Windows Vista, even gamers wouldn't have upgraded to Windows Vista. Windows Vista will eventually replace Windows XP, as newer machines will come bundled with it, but the current breed of Windows XP-based machines certainly has no reason to pay and upgrade it.

P.S. My next PC will be a notebook for sure and will be looking forward to a Windows Vista based one.

Vista has a compatibility problem with other softwares, say Nero7. Its window explorer would neither install the complete software nor would uninstall the truncated files from the system. Microsoft only gives a message that as soon as it finds a solution to the problem, it would notify. In the meanwhile a hard-disk space of 200 mb has been occupied by the unusable software on my computer and I am waiting for a response from Microsoft.

It is all about money, Honey ! After all how Microsoft is going to survive keeping in view the monopoly and vice like grip it has over OS business ? Despite all those free open end softwares floating around, consumers all over the world would flock to Microsoft like flies to fire. No wonder, Microsoft's support to XP would stop oneday and the story would go on.

you are one 100% right. Even in win xp i maintain classic look as it consumes less graphics clock. also as u told it requires stringent hardware requirements and HDD space. even if i have vista i will maintain classic look only, if i really need a glossy look i will turn towards MAC OS as vista itself is a PC version of MAC OS (Aero concept based themes pirated from MAC OS, even many features are mirrored) hence apple is thinking to launch MAC OS panther. should you require more graphics then use SLI based cards with Directx 10 or abouve, you can experience it

I wish Microsoft would stop gimmicking with each OS they come out with. Why don't they focus on functionality like boot from USB, running a software without having to install it, boot in 5 seconds, smaller OS size, do not install unnecessary shit on the drive like Outlook, IE, AOL etc unless asked. People might then actually praise Microsoft for once if they can achieve these things..

Dookieeeeeeeeee, Business drives technology . in Which world are you?. what productivity u get by booting from a USB ? FYI the .net programs just need a xcopy command to work. u really don't have to install it unless it needs to be customized to user

Well,I have not read all comments but have read the article. I must say he is not well informed. 1.Dx 10 improves little practical graphics for game. What it does new is use GPU to increase the OS performance which was absent previosly and took much time to integrate the OS kernel with GPU instruction set. 2.Vista have new kernel and totaly new code from dirt. You can't say that its just its graphic. You are welcomed to use it without graphic in its cheapest version and see the difference from XP yourself. 3.And yes it is not that persuasive to use it for network server. But still you will admit its kernel awarness toward the network itself. 4.Once you use it, you will notice the difference in managing your files. Note: Vista is not here to improve graphics,But it does well in that department neverthless.

Arey Bhopali !!! Do you have a graphic card... make & model please... How much RAM do you have... The author is 100% correct.. VISTA is better than XP but we don't need it right now.. its only the gamers who will move to VISTA first but eventually we all will have to move to VISTA.... thats what the author bragged.....

Man, you all are not reading my comment properly, I suggest you read it nice and quietly. And yes this is my computer specs: AMD 3500+ 2 gigabute ram 500 GB HDD nvidia 8800 GTX Samsung 23 inch HDTV And yes author is not right because he don't know technical things as he mentioned here or otherwise didn't used his knowledge in this article.

How much performance does an average Joe need... How many new features does he use regulerly... the point to the whole argument is that at this time VISTA is not necessary for everyone... The only reason right now for people to move to it would be to enjoy DX10 games & they would be hardcore gamers.. but eventually everyone will surely move to VISTA... no argument about it... For the time being it is not absolutely necessary to run VISTA.... Also VISTA is better than XP but we don't need it right now...

I have tested the RTM using the 32 bit "ultimate" edition.problems 1.resource hog>why? linux and mac have cool graphics with minimal to normal reources being used.>by design>on purpose. 2.security>Bu**SH*T>vista installs and it's the same crap the user is administrator by default. This will be exploited BIG TIME. Why not teach people how to run as restricted user>much safer! 3.still buggy I tried changing the desktop background and windows explorer hung the crashed several times. 4.No real benefits over xp besides the new buggy gui.Unless you consider the 400.00 price tag and more DRM and built in WGA Best advice keep XP as long as possible and wait a few days before installing any update so you don't get clipped by more of m$ bad behavior.

hey, author is right in some aspects, especially that only gamer(need DX10) will upgrade. but what about security patches. MS will stop it , right? Yes, but so will hackers stop attacks. they will move on to vista. same happened with 98 to XP change.

I remember seeing almost the exact words sometime when XP came out (Chip or PC Quest ? I don't remember) . Unfortunately we don't realize what suckers like us can do with good marketing combined with FUD.

Very revealing. I just goes to show you, "build it and someone will buy it," just to brag that they have the lastest,Gizmo. I recently heard a new word,"snobmoddity" which combines snob adn commodity, I guess it means consumers constant pursuit of the best and newest stuff. I'm a gamer and will have to have it along with a quad core , the new 8800 cards and a physics engine. Or maybe I can do with less?

Well then this is the best time to buy licensed copies of windows xp home edition whose price would be reduced further before 31st Jan 2007. I bought One Copy of OEM For Rs 3484/- on the 22nd of Nov 2006. I think Price of Vista Home Basic When Released would be the same.

I fully agree.win xp is the most stable and will remain the best OS speacially for non gamers for years to come.with proper tweaking(low system resource) its a pleasure working with XP.But now Depending on your current system configurations,we will have to see if we could turn off all the eye candy and all other unwanted stuff vista will come with to be make it a minimum of upgrade as possible.

"Well, update your Windows XP with the latest patch..."... Well, there won't be many of those in future - remember Win 98?. This is another pressure tactic that M$ follows, albeit successfully as per precedence, to arm-twist users for migrating to their new cash-baby.

PC needs major revamp of Hardware...minimum 512MB ram, without which installation is not possible..so u need atleast 1GB ram for optimal performance. The User Access control is a pain...even opening the device manager comes up with warning screen the so called security. My first job was to disable it. And un-signed driver caused real pain in x64 machines..uff Vista is real tough time :(

I've heard the same story when people did not want to upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98. Turns out, Win98 was much better than 95 in terms of stability and was more like a complete bug fix to 98. Only problem was that it required almost 200mb of disk space vs 30mb of 95. That's a real problem with Microsoft's products. I think they just shit on their old OS and whoa...out comes a new one. Looks like Vista will be the same. And with all the Aero crap and non-functional nonsense that will confuse users, I'd stick with my older functional OS thank you.

just remember that all those cool aero glass effects need a huge amt of ram and gpu power..ubuntu or for that matter any linux distro with xgl/berry/aixgl can do the same thing with existing configs...as for usability i still cant get over the fact that windows sorts programs alphabetically..that is just ridiculous

Punit- I think Vista has some fantastic features that are easily overlooked. Windows Explorer provides tremendous options for sorting, grouping and filtering files, plus collapsible headings that display a count of the number of objects in that group. These are improvements I will appreciate many times every single day. peace, mjh

I am agreed with the author. I think MS follows the simple strategy for product building. fist launch a basic product, release it like miracle, collect bugs and customer quires, release Patchs and patches...then after sum years. .normaly 2-5, Again a New version with Blast...that?s nice.. isn?t
