Microsoft's most eagerly awaited "iPod killer" opened to a rather slow response from shoppers in particular, and the market in general.
The Zune portable music player hit US store shelves yesterday, but initial shopper response turned out to be something of a 'mixed bag'.
Following reports, two retail outlets; namely, the Virgin Megastore and CompUSA, did not even have Zune on their shelves.
While a Virgin spokesperson said that they had Zunes in stock, but that the players were not the right fit for the store's shelves; a spokesperson for CompUSA said that the store was supposed to get the new media players, but that somehow the Zunes got delayed.
Radio Shack's Assistant Manager went a step further. He said that the store is not scheduled to sell Zunes yet.
Best Buy of course, was a different story altogether...
Bagwell, General Manager of Best Buy, said that while typically, customers do not drop by till later in the afternoon, on Nov 14, there was a steady stream of interested buyers (mostly men) just before lunchtime.
Bagwell expressed the view that customers seemed to have 'gift giving' on their minds. Reportedly, they touched and tapped on Zune displays, asking store staff about possible differences between Microsoft's Zune and Apple Computer's iPod.
Bagwell thought the Zune was doing pretty well - better than what he expected!
At the end of the day, going by a cross-section of customer responses, Zune's larger screen and ease-of-use seem to be the focal points of attraction. However, many customers seemed concerned about the inadequate storage (30GB).
Microsoft's Zune comes with a 30GB hard drive for saving music files, and connects to an online music store titled 'the Zune Marketplace', which is again tipped to compete with Apple's iTunes Music Store.
The Zune sells for $249, which happens to also be the price of an iPod with similar sized memory.
On its part, Microsoft says the huge investment on Zune may take years to bear fruit. Analysts too feel that the Zune will not be able to challenge the iPod - not just yet - not this holiday season and through a good part of 2007...
I want to buy Zune player in India (Mumbai), who will help me?
If anyone have store address where I purchase this Zune player, please give me add and customer care number.

I think consumers should avoid Zune AND Ipod, they both strive to lock you into their software and their exclusive content souces ... that's a consumer sucker play IMHO.
Why Zune & iPod ? They lock you in with proprietory software and restrictions. One's better off anytime with a quality player from Creative, Sandisk or Transcend which costs much less too.
Thiz Krishna..
i'm an owner of an iPod and i do agree wid ya dat Zune sales might be a bit sluggish now...i.e. in the beginning. but it has many new features which may cause Apple's sales to downride for the days to come unless they jump on to the networking wagon which the ZUNE is riding. i find the IEEE Wi-fi standard hardware i.e. 802.1 b/g very attractive. it is a great channel to communicate wid other compatible devices ( here..other zunes and/or a comp). add to it a 3.0 inch screen which is 44% larger than iPod and also a different user interface....i do think ZUNE's gonna click.
well....speaking on the negative side....it can hold only 30GB of data and given dat it is a bit larger than iPod Video i.e. the 5th generation thingy, guys who prefer lesser volume...r gonna give it a thought. and the band of guys who want to hav a Mp3 player not bigger than a wrigley's chewing gum packet aka iPod Nano are really gonna shy away from this. and MOST IMPORTANTLY the lack of a TOUCH SENSITIVE BROWSING HARDWARE like the breakthrough APPLE CLICK WHEEL.....people who are devoted to SIMPLICITY and ease of use....r gonna give ZUNE a break.
finally.....its juzz gonna be a future whooz gonna reveal the success of Microsoft's campaign against Apple.
so....WAIT AND WATCH....to wat extent....the two STEVES go.... ;)
Guys Apple is coming with iPOD plus with adding FM+ WIFI connectivity +even downloading live videos from sites and uniquely getting the complte detials of the songs played on the iPOD tats a gr8 feature we can get details of music singer of the song played on ipod and even record songs which are coming on FM
i think apple had to respond with their new generation of ipods. but instead they just went on with reducing size and increasing the battery life. what a crap? they cannot underestimate the consumer.
read this :
Sharable music files can be played only a maximum of three times, and expire after three days whether they are played or not. Recipients cannot re-send music that they have received via the sharing feature.
Wat a load of CRAP....no use of the wifi feature...
