McAfee today announced the launch of McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus, the first Web safety tool to actively shield consumers' computers from dangerous Web sites encountered whilst browsing, searching, and instant messaging or e-mailing.

McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus takes McAfee SiteAdvisor from being just a helpful guide, to actively enforcing SiteAdvisor's safety ratings, as also to actively shielding computers from interaction with risky sites. Consumers may use McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus either to complement their existing McAfee products, or with non-McAfee security products, else as a stand-alone solution.

Bill Kerrigan, executive vice president, McAfee, said, "McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus is a strong complement to McAfee's easy to use and comprehensive consumer product line. This product extends to IM and e-mail communications an 'early warning system' SiteAdvisor pioneered for browsing, searching, and transacting online. Coupled with our security suites, McAfee delivers proven, integrated protection at each step of the consumer's computer experience."

A prominent feature of McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus is 'Protected Mode' meant for enforcement of safety ratings by redirecting consumers to a safe page any time their computer is about to interact with a risky site. This feature provides critical protection to: heavy Internet users, households that share computers with younger or less Web-savvy users, or anyone who desires "load and go" protection. 'Protected Mode' is password protected, enabling parents or other computer administrators to control the feature.

To put it simply, McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus checks links embedded in e-mail and instant messages, warning consumers before they make a bad click decision. World-wide, more than 170 billion e-mails and more than 14 billion instant messages are sent per day. In today's world of drive-by attacks, during which a single click can ruin a computer and cause irreparable data loss, it's important for consumers to know in advance whether a link contained in an e-mail or IM is safe or not.

McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus supports a broad range of instant messaging and e- mail platforms, including Yahoo! Messenger (Y!M), Windows Live Messenger (MSM), Google Talk, Outlook, Outlook Express, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Microsoft Live Mail (Hotmail), and Gmail. Support for AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and AOL Mail is under development.
