Interview with the Director of IOL Broadband
Recently, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and IOL Broadband rolled-out India's first IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) service, with IOL Broadband providing Content Delivery Network.

In the first phase, MTNL will offer IPTV services to its existing 2.2 million subscribers in Mumbai. On this occasion, Techtree caught up with A S Oberai, Director, IOL Broadband, who was more than happy to share some insights with us:

Could you please explain IPTV technology to us?
IPTV is a system wherein digital quality television service is delivered to consumers using Broadband connection.

The H.264 /Part 10 Encoders, Video On Demand (VOD) Servers, Middleware Software and Hardware and DRM and Set Top Boxes are the main components of IPTV Headend.

VOD is the key attraction of IPTV. VOD allows you to order movies, celebrity shows, music shows, or concerts on demand, just by pressing a button on the remote control.

And, we are planning on providing Interactive services that include daily news, world news, entertainment news, technology news, horoscope information, shopping lists, weather reports, oil prices, and exchange rates.

What is the investment required to deploy IPTV at home?
Customers need to subscribe for Tri-Band, and then pay Rs 199 a month to avail of the basic package.

Do you think IPTV is an affordable option, given the availability of cheaper cables, CAS, etc?
Yes, it is an affordable option as compared to cable TV, as in IPTV, customers can avail VAS (Value Added Services) that are not available in case of traditional cable connections.

How many channels will be available on offer with IPTV?
IPTV allows customers to be in-sync with new and unique content from popular channels across the globe. Currently, IOL IPTV has 16 channels featured around Entertainment, Music, Kids, and News.

Which other cities can expect IPTV in future?
Bangalore and Chennai

Is it compulsory to use IPTV STBs from the same service provider? or is it based on open architecture, that any IPTV STB can be used?

Also, you need to rent one more set top box for iptv in addition to one you are having for broadband. If you want wach all the channels which you are watching through cable / DTH you have to spend around Rs.800-900/- against 200-300. but other services like video on demand and video calling seems to be very attactive.

It is very expensive as compared to cable tv. Also I doubt the clarity of the picture provided over broadband as it might get distorted.
