Yahoo! India has launched the Indichat plug-in that enables users to chat in Hindi and Tamil without a special language keyboard. All users need to do is load the Side Panel plug-in, and start chatting in Hindi and Tamil.

Yahoo! India also offers other plug-ins, which facilitate chat in other Indian languages like Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Malayalam. A user with any language keyboard can chat on Yahoo Messenger 8.0 in that language.

According to company sources, the plug-in feature will revolutionize user experience on Yahoo! Messenger 8.0 by enabling music, finance, games, answers, and many more features in their messenger window. It will take Yahoo! Messenger beyond just a device for chatting, making it a daily essential service for net users.

Commenting on the launch, I M Swaminathan, director - communication products, Yahoo! India, said, "Plug is a concept exclusive to Yahoo! and the best thing about the concept is that any user who wants to and can develop a plug-in, can submit it, and allow users to use the plug-in. We already have a lot of users submitting plug-ins, and others using them. The other languages will be rolled out within a Quarter or two."

Innovative features of Yahoo! Indichat are: the Plug-in works on Version 8 of Yahoo! India Messenger, and is a Side Panel Plug-in. Currently, it allows users to chat in Hindi and Tamil using an English keyboard, messages can be sent across messenger versions, users can also send instant messages to their Windows Live contacts in the Yahoo! messenger buddy list through the interoperability feature, and Indichat also allows users to search for content in Hindi/Tamil on Yahoo! India Search.

Another unique feature from Yahoo! India is the introduction of Indian language Audibles, which are available in Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Punjabi. Audibles are an extremely popular fun feature of Yahoo! Messenger.

Yahoo! India also announced the launch of Yahoo! Mail beta for India.

Highlights of the Yahoo! Mail beta include a sleek, easy-to-use interface with the speed and responsiveness of a desktop application. The latest version also features innovative online calendar integration, and provides a fast, efficient experience with enhanced functionality, such as drag and drop e-mail organization, message preview, and an integrated RSS reader. Like the current Yahoo! Mail experience, the new version is a free, browser-based service, accessible from virtually any computer connected to the Internet, without the need for a software download.

The Indichat plug-in for Hindi and Tamil can be downloaded by users onto their Yahoo! Messenger 8.0. The service will soon be rolled out in other Indian languages as well.
