The Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of an Amendment Bill to the Information Technology Act, 2000.
The Information Technology Act was originally enacted in the year 2000, keeping in view the technology directions and the scenario existing at that time. It aimed at boosting e-commerce, and creating an environment conducive to the growth of e-governance in the country. It provided a legal framework for transactions to be carried out using computers and Internet technologies.
As technology is an ever-evolving process for providing efficient and cost-effective options, concerns have been raised regarding the inadequacy of existing data protection and privacy laws in the country.
During a press briefing, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, P R Dasmunshi, said that security practices and procedures would be prescribed for the benefit of organizations and customers, and that the government would revisit laws pertaining to technology, especially those around data protection and privacy.
It is also proposed that amendments will be targeted against new forms of computer misuse like video voyeurism, identity theft, e-commerce frauds, frauds on online auction sites, sending of offensive emails, and other such.
However, all amendments to the IT Act, 2000 will be presented in the forthcoming Winter session of Parliament.
