Yahoo! is expanding its presence in India, with plans to launch up to six new portals in regional languages, and enter into partnership with an Indian company.

A Yahoo! spokesperson said that the company is planning to launch new portals in about 2 to 6 Indian regional languages, and that an announcement to this effect is expected to be made in the next few weeks. It is, however, unclear, whether the portals in regional languages will be extensions to the existing ones, or will be completely new.

Yahoo! will also expand its R&D center in Bangalore, and has already acquired a new building for the purpose. The company will increase the headcount at the center by 200, taking the total to 1,000, by the end of this year.

The Yahoo! spokesperson further said that the company is in discussions with various Indian companies for partnerships and acquisitions, and that a decision on the matter is expected in the next 6 to 10 months.

However, the spokesperson declined to disclose further details about the investments lined-up for India, saying that investments would be made basis the opportunities that arise.
