Just a month back, Apple Computer and Dell instituted a wide-spread recall for batteries manufactured by Sony that formed an intrinsic part of some of their laptop models. So much so that Virgin Atlantic too was forced to issue a 'blanket ban' on Apple and Dell laptops with batteries. Yet another company to join the fray is Toshiba, which has reportedly announced a recall for around 3,40,000 batteries manufactured by Sony.
A Toshiba spokesperson said that batteries installed in around eight models of the company's 'Dynabook' and 'Dynabook Satellite' laptops manufactured between March and May this year could fail on the road because of problems encountered in storing and transmitting of power.
However, going by reports, Toshiba's battery problems differ from those of Apple and Dell in that they are not as severe as in the case of the other two companies. In case of Apple and Dell, the faulty batteries were overheating and catching fire. At the time, Apple recalled about 1.8 million batteries, while Dell recalled a record 4.1 million batteries.
In the latest case, Toshiba says the affected batteries will not catch fire, but that they might fail and run out of power. The company adds that failure would occur only in rare cases. Although it has assured customers of free replacement of faulty batteries, the company has not disclosed the number of cases of battery failure reported so far.
