World Cyber Games (WCG) 2006, the very eagerly awaited Cyber Olympics event, has kicked off in the country, and is reportedly witnessing great response, even better than the last few years.
WCG 2006 is presented by Samsung India in association with indiatimes.com, and is organized by Indiagames, panning across six cities, with the fourth preliminaries currently being held in Bangalore.
According to authorities, WCG is an unique computer gaming event of international repute, designed to build a healthy cyber culture. In the course of this gaming event, the best of gamers from all over the world gather in various cities to share the fun and excitement of sheer gaming. WCG has been promoted on the lines of the International Olympic movement.
This year, Samsung Electronics, South Korea, is the main sponsor for WCG in over 70 countries. Winners from each of the 70 countries will compete at the WCG Finals to be held at the 'Autodromo National' at Monza in Italy from October 18 to 22, 2006. The Semi Finals and Finals of the Indian leg of the tourney will be held in Mumbai on the 26 and 27 of September respectively.
The WCG India Preliminaries are being organized in six cities of the country, including Chandigarh, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, and Mumbai. The preliminaries concluded in Chandigarh, New Delhi, and Hyderabad saw an enthusiastic participation from college goers and senior students. It is expected that the turn-out will be as good in the rest of the cities as well.
The games featured at the WCG 2006 include: Counter Strike 1.6 (5 member team), Warcraft III, FIFA Soccer 2006, and Need for Speed.
Inaugurating the preliminary in Bangalore, Hary Ahn, vice president - IT Sales, Samsung India, said, "Today, PC Gaming is an evolved sport - fostering virtues of team work, healthy competitiveness between teams and individuals, and there is a strong emphasis on planning and analytical skills. While most of us interface with the PC as a productivity enhancement tool, today, PC gaming is emerging as a very strong entertainment platform across the world."
Winners from the six-odd Indian cities will meet for the Semi Finals in Mumbai, and the those who emerge ultimate winners (including one 5-member team and 3 individual gamers) will get to represent India at the upcoming Grand Finale in Monza, Italy.
