Research in Motion (RIM) has unveiled its latest mobile handset, the BlackBerry Pearl, which the company says is one of the smallest and lightest smart phones in the world.

The BlackBerry Pearl is a feature-rich smart phone, which incorporates best-in-class technology including digital camera, multimedia capabilities, and an expandable memory slot.

Commenting on the new smart phone, Mike Lazaridis, president and co-chief executive officer, RIM, said, "The BlackBerry Pearl elegantly combines an incredibly small, stylish, and full-featured smart phone with the gold standard in wireless email, and the result is something special. Through the integration of hardware, software, and service we are able to deliver a mobile experience that stands apart in the industry."

The new Berry measures 4.2-inch x 1.97-inch x .57-inch, and weighs 3.1 ounces, and comes with quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled mobile application powerhouse. It features built-in 64MB flash memory, which is expandable with a MicroSD. This the first time RIM has added this feature to its handset.

According to RIM, the BlackBerry Pearl incorporates premium features including speaker-independent voice recognition for voice activated dialing (VAD); support for polyphonic, mp3, and MIDI ring tones; and intuitive call management features such as smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, and call forwarding. Additionally, the Pearl features a speakerphone and Bluetooth 2.0 for use with hands-free headsets, car kits, and other Bluetooth peripherals. It supports the BlackBerry Desktop Software synchronization via Bluetooth.

The new smart phone comes with an enhanced version of RIM's SureType QWERTY keypad technology. It supports BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server. The Internet service allows access to up to 10 personal and corporate email accounts, including popular ISP email accounts. The Berry also supports popular instant messaging services such as AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ.

The new handset features a large, ultra-bright, high resolution (240x260) display with built-in light-sensing technology, which automatically adjusts the screen and keypad brightness in indoor, outdoor, and dark environments. The phone features a trackball for fast vertical and lateral scrolling, as also dedicated "menu" and "escape" keys on either side of the trackball.

Other features include a 1.3 megapixel camera with built-in flash and 5x digital zoom, and media player with support for MP3, ACC, MPEG4 and H.263 file formats. A unique feature is maps for step-by-step driving directions, which is currently available only in the North America version.

The BlackBerry Pearl is available in the US for the first month beginning September 12, for around $200. The smart phone will come along with a two-year contract. The Pearl is expected to ship in the APAC region and in Latin America later this year.

Those who intend to buy the Blackberry Pearl with Airtel's service in India, do beware: 1. Email service on airtel.blackberry.com id is unreliable, as there is "no server" where to push emails from! I bought my Pearl in Dec-2006 and have lost most emails when the helpline tried to re-configure after my email send-and-receive stopped for some reason. 2. Trackball was beautiful, but since couple of weeks, scrolling has become erratic for me. Sometimes, upward scrolling does not work, and at other times, scroll to left fails. If the problem cannot be solved and the instrument has to be replaced, it takes about 15 days (in Bangalore). 3. Airtel and BB support has been poor, whether on phone or email. Calls get dropped, and they don't stretch to call back or follow up, beyond an immediate and annoying customer-satisfaction sms. "Call volumes are high" is the standard response. Requests get "closed" though customer still faces problems, and if serious complaints are raised, the call is either dropped or you are told that a remark has been raised in their systems (whose wording, of course, bears scant resemblance to the issue at hand. 4. Blackberry Prosumer (tariff) Plan for data can get switched to Rs.899 plan even if you've signed up for the 499 one. You're told to get company approval, though it's a personal phone. Bills and collection followup via sms, manual calls, automated calls, etc., gets done 3-4 times daily by different agencies ... to a point that outgoing calls are cut. It's happened to me while on holiday with family in Mumbai, for a fault that Airtel+BB committed. 5. Other than for music, ringtones, pic, and video, files can neither be saved from within BB (even if it's attached to email) nor viewed (when not attached to an email). More later ... Regards, --- Vinit

i bought a pearl for 25G and im totally happy with it. I agree, pearl is not for everyday users. If u want a cellfone with flashy cameras and look-at-me features, then blackberry pearl is NOT FOR YOU. As for pearl, its whats under the hood that matters. Pearl's processing capacity is unparred till now by any other mobile or PDAs. I never lost coverage in any country. And with the updates from RIM, i have a complete MS office Vista package for my word and powerpoint needs. Not to mention that u can upgrade the memory upto 25GB. You can forget your iPod. Like i said blackberry pearl is a waste of money for some. For others, it becomes a way of life.

Beginning Sep 12, in US, it costs Rs.9000 equivalent USD 200. When I eqnuired in Noida, dealer says Rs.25000/-. Isn't too high in India ? Isn't it better to wait and watch to get the best price ?

1.3 Megapixel phones should be shunned competely. I don't think they deserve a place in the Indian maeket much less the world market. The technology already exists to put a 22 megapixel camera into a phone. Samung had done it as a proof of concept about six months ago. Basically, it's a waste of money if you go for a 1.3M or 2M camera phone. Nokia's N73 3.2 megapixel camera phone produces good images that can be considered as camera quality. (N80 however does not even though it has the same rating of 3.2M. It produces a washed out image). I think if you're going to pay 20K for a phone, first of all, it should weigh and feel and look like a 20K phone(eg: W800i was a 20K phone sometime back and was quite featureful but it looked like a 2K phone sizewise and it's camera though good could not give me the satisfaction of a good image. Also, the MP3 player and ear buds were ok but not upto walkman + headphones quality bass and audio detail)

The K790i has a built in 3.2 megapixel came with CCD sensor and not the horrible low cost cmos sensor. It is a full fledged sony cybershot incoroprated into a phone. Its price is around 20K.Buy it blindfolded and oh yes did I mention a xenon flash and not that useless led flash that comes with othr phones!

I'm just saying that if one is investing a whole lot of cash, he should get what he pays for. What's the point of getting a high end phone with a bad camera and poor mp3 playback? A Nokia 1100 can suffice for making calls :) At a higher price point, a consumer is looking for more.

Dookie is right in whatever he says...it is time now to move on from 1.3 mp. Almost all decent ph these days come with 2mp camera. And if u are launching a techy smart ph in 20K+ price band u have to have a good camera as well.
