Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, has announced that the two state-owned telecom majors, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will jointly lay a high speed submarine cable system connecting India to South-East Asia and the Middle East.

In a statement, Maran said that the cable system will provide international bandwidth to the countries concerned, and that if Middle East countries bring down landing costs of the submarine cable, bandwidth prices will be able to be slashed. Incidentally, BSNL's India-Sri Lanka submarine cable project is on the verge of being launched.

Maran also urged telecom companies to reduce landing costs for calls in the West Asian region that supposedly has a sizeable Indian population.

The ultimate intent of the cable system is to extend it to the US and Europe, thus speeding-up international long distance (ILD) communication apart from bringing down tariffs.

Maran pointed-out that the country's present submarine cable system scenario is not very encouraging, with only four Indian bandwidth providers, namely VSNL, Bharti, BSNL, and Reliance. Besides, bandwidth usage in India is less than one-tenth that in the US. Hence the possibility of international bandwidth out-performing capacity available in the country.
