Google has launched Google Apps for Your Domain, a set of hosted applications for organizations, aimed at providing high quality communications tools to users without the hassle of installing and maintaining software or hardware. Google Apps for Your Domain is actually an extension of the Gmail for Your Domain service that was launched in February 2006.

Using the new application, organizations can customize the interface based on AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) with their brand logo and color scheme used at the domain. They can modify services as per their need, by using tools offered through Google Apps for Your Domain. However, the e-mail service, Gmail, would remain a domain address.

Google Apps for Your Domain includes Gmail Web email, Google Talk, Google Calendar, and Google Page Creator. Google says it will later come-out with versions targeted at the needs of small and large businesses, universities, ISPs, family Web sites, community groups, and non-profit making organisations.

Commenting on the new application, Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager - enterprise, Google, said that organizations of all sizes face a common challenge of helping their users communicate and share information more effectively. A hosted service like Google Apps for Your Domain eliminates many of the expenses and hassles of maintaining a communications infrastructure, which is a relief for many small business owners and IT staffers.

The beta version of Google Apps for Your Domain is available for free at www.google.com/a. Organizations signing-up during the beta period will not require to pay at all. However, a premium version of the product is also being developed for large organizations with more advanced needs.

Further details including pricing are yet to be released.
