Laptops around-the-world seem set for a make-over, thanks to Intel Corp's announcement that systems based on its Centrino Duo mobile technology with Core 2 Duo mobile processors are now shipping.
Intel Core 2 Duo processors (formerly codenamed "Merom") boast two processing cores or "computing brains" capable of handling multiple tasks in lesser time, and using lesser power. The processors promise greatly improved performance for videos, gaming, and multimedia activities, especially whilst multi-tasking. Systems based on Core 2 Duo processors are touted as cooler, sleeker, and more efficient.
Speaking about the new processors, David Perlmutter, senior vice president - mobility group, Intel Corp, said, "With the launch of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, we have taken an extraordinary leap in mobile and desktop computing in just one year. For laptops, the new processors have doubled performance, giving consumers and businesses an immersive mobile experience, while keeping power consumption and battery life unchanged. The dual-core processing power of Core 2 Duo processors helps people handle the toughest of multi-tasking scenarios, no matter where they are."
Launched last month, Core 2 Duo processors are already shipping as part of Intel Viiv technology-based entertainment PCs. The company estimates over 200 Centrino Duo mobile technology-based designs from PC manufacturers, resellers, and integrators the world over to incorporate the new processors this year. Laptops based on Centrino Duo mobile technology with Core 2 Duo processors will also incorporate Intel's 945 Express chipset, and its PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network connection.
According to reports, post the Intel announcement, several companies are making a beeline for installing Core 2 Duo mobile processors in their laptop product lines. One of these is Dell, which has reportedly already installed the new processors in its XPS, Inspiron, and Latitude Notebooks, as also in its Precision Mobile Workstations. Apple Computer, not to be left behind, is expected to follow suit. Other names in the running include HP, Samsung, and Alienware, among others.
Meanwhile, mobile versions of Intel Core 2 Duo processors T7600, T7400, T7200, T5600, and T5500 are priced at $637, $423, $294, $241, and $209 respectively, taken in 1,000-unit quantities.
Maloy from Santa Clara says he has had a Core 2 for 3 months? Funny...intel says the first day it shipped was yesterday. It wasn't even out yet Maloy. Open your cpu cover and check.
One Good effect of intro of core 2 duo is that Acer has reduced prices on its Centrino PM & Dual core laptops, there is a good reduction in todays' papers, saw one in the Tribune. The Acer Centrino laptop for 36k is now within reach.
IMO, for this new type of Processor there should be optimised applications/games should be available.... to make max use of processor power. Other wise it will be same as having Centrino Laptop
But cpu such as this deserve a graphic card as well to exploit its true potential..... And it means not just any entry level card but atleast a mid level card.... in India most laptops have only onboard graphics..... Even in models with cards they are selling it with either 6200GO or X300 mobile series...Unless there is a good graphic card there is no point purchasing such high priced cpu's.... Though how much battery life is enhanced should be seen.... If its phenomenol then ofcource most users will get it (Business Class).... But still I believe it should be complimented with a good graphic card...
these updaes helps to me for future.

Intel Core Duo processor is optimized for multi-threaded applications and multitasking. You can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching programs - while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background.
