EMI Group and Microsoft have reportedly signed a deal under which EMI music videos will be available on Microsoft's upcoming media player "Zune," slated for release later this year.
Consumers will be offered videos of American actor, Jared Leto's alternative rock band, "30 Seconds To Mars," as also those of English electro-pop band, "Hot Chip". Incidentally, EMI also provides content to Apple's popular iTunes online music service.
Commenting on the development, Jeff Kempler, executive vice president - Virgin Records America, EMI, said that Apple Computer is an important partner in building the digital music market, but that any well-funded serious entrant has also got to be good news for artists and the industry.
Industry watchers say that the two features that differentiate Zune from Apple's iPod are its ability to transfer music files wirelessly from one Zune device to another, and the sharing of music between Zune users.
EMI says its artists' videos will be pre-loaded on Zune, along with videos from other record labels. According to reports, Universal Music, owned by France's Vivendi, is also in discussions with Microsoft on featuring videos on Zune.
Microsoft though has not released complete details on Zune yet, however, it is learnt that the player will use a hard drive and Wi-fi to allow users download content directly onto it.
