Google has reportedly acquired Santa Monica, California-based Neven Vision, a photo-recognition software making company, for an undisclosed amount.

Neven Vision specializes in object and facial recognition technology. Apparently, Google plans to use Neven Vision technology to enhance Picasa, which is its own photo-management software.

Commenting on the likely usage of Neven Vision technology, Adrian Graham, product manager - Picasa, Google, said that the same can be used for simple things like detecting whether or not a photograph shows a particular person, or more complex tasks like recognizing people, places, and objects. Graham expressed the view that this technology might actually make it easier to organize and find photos.

However, Google is yet to disclose what it intends doing with other Neven Vision products that are currently under development.

At present, Neven Vision offers a set of image-recognition and facial-analysis applications for segments such as mobile marketing, search, and security. One such application for mobile marketing is iScout, using which people can take pictures with regular camera phones, and then send them to a special database to get content related to these images.
