The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has reportedly renewed its contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to manage technical functions for the Internet's domain name system.

The new contract covers the technical management of the domain name system (DNS), and will be effective beginning October 1, which is a day after the existing contract expires. Technically, the agreement lasts for one year, and the government has the option of renewing it each year for up to four additional years.

For now, DOC has simply extended the contract for ICANN to manage the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions till 2011. ICANN says the contract extends its management of Internet Protocol address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic and country-code top-level domain name systems, and root server system functions.

Commenting on the extension, Paul Twomey, president and chief executive officer, ICANN, said that in executing the contract, DOC has confirmed that ICANN is uniquely positioned to perform this function.

The new contract for IANA functions is a five-year agreement, comprising a series of one-year options. ICANN has reportedly held contract for this function since 1998.

Twomey asserted that extension of the contract means that ICANN is the chosen organization responsible for a range of functions vital to the day-to-day operation of the DNS, and hence the Internet.
