According to reports, Mumbai-based IOL Broadband has signed a content delivery network affiliation contract with state-owned MTNL.
According to reports, Mumbai-based IOL Broadband, which is among the country's first broadband companies, has signed a content delivery network affiliation contract with state-owned behemoth, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).
The tie-up will allow IOL Broadband access to over two lakh ADSL Broadband subscribers of MTNL, to offer them Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) content.
MTNL plans to deploy over one million ADSL modems in the next 24 months. And with the availability of high quality content, the pace of deployment is expected to accelerate.
Besides, using a state-of-the-art Network Center plus its own Metro Fiber Ethernet Network, IOL Broadband has already interconnected its network with MTNL's ADSL network.
The service will reportedly include IPTV-Time shifted viewing and Video-on-Demand (VOD). With this, several hundred Bollywood and Hollywood movies are expected to be made available-on-demand via MTNL s network.
MTNL says that with the advent of IOL Broadband's IPTV and VOD service, India will join a select few countries where these services are available.
According to sources, MTNL is expected to be the first to go live with IPTV and VOD, with a launch likely in Mumbai and Delhi by January 2007. MTNL is also believed to be in the final stages of the IPTV plan, wherein IOL Broadband will be supplying the set-top box as well as part of the content delivery network.
I m not sure as to exactly what will we be offered. But it seems that Videos and TV channels can now be seen through MTNL broadband. will this replace the present MTNL broad band reutor?
YES don't they know... 1gb just ain't enuf. In fact, how much ever bandwidth they provide it's never enough coz we're far behind what the US is getting at homes 6 - 8 Gbps .. guess changing channels will take some time to load initially as that's the time the broadband is used maximum!
Present ADSL2+ technology with BSNL/MTNL can offer a bandwidth of 24MBPS which is enough for Triple play services like IPTV. see the link below for further clarification
