Red Hat and IIT Delhi have announced that they will jointly hold a Knowledge Symposium, titled "Owning the Future: Ideas and their Role in the Digital Age".
The symposium, which is being held in Delhi on August 24 and 25, aims to scour India's current legal framework for knowledge assets, in the background of the country's forte of intellectual inquiry, globalization, and rapid growth of the open-source movement.
Moreover, the symposium is meant to be an event set against the backdrop of current developments, including the threat from individuals and corporations seeking to colonize the country's traditional knowledge; the global reaction against software patents, which threaten to throttle innovation; and the rise of the open-source community globally.
Besides, the event promises to bring-together some of the leading voices from the world of traditional knowledge, as also that of free and open-source software.
The prominent speakers at the symposium will reportedly include Sam Pitroda, Chairman of the National Knowledge Commission; James Boyle of the Center for Public Domain, USA; Eben Moglen of the Software Freedom Law Center; Jim Wales, Founder of Wikipedia; M S Vijay Kumar, Academic Director and Assistant Provost, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); D B Phatak of IIT Mumbai; and Anil Gupta of IIM Ahmedabad.
Commenting on the forthcoming symposium, Venkatesh Hariharan, head - open source affairs, Red Hat India, said, "The intellectual traditions of India place great value on the sharing of knowledge. This symposium aims to explore the trends of intellectual property and software patents versus the growing open-source community that upholds values of sharing and collaboration. We are happy to partner with a leading academic institution like IIT Delhi in this effort."
