Apple Computer is seriously targeting use of the word "Pod" in an attempt to protect infringement of its popular iPod trademark.
According to reports, Apple has sent "cease-and-desist" letters to companies that are using in any way, "Pod" as part of their names or products. So far, letters have been received by two companies, including Mach5products which makes Profit Pod, and the other company named TightPod.
Profit Pod is a device that compiles data from vending machines, while TightPod manufactures slip-on covers designed to protect electronic products such as laptops and MP3 players.
The two companies have been asked to remove the word Pod from their/their products' names. Additionally, TightPod has come out with a new product by the same name for which again Apple has asked the company to abandon its trademark.
Commenting on this development, Dave Ellison, owner, Mach5Products, said that they have received the cease-and-desist letter from Apple just after receiving trademark recognition for the name in USA.
On parallel lines, Terry Wilson, maker of TightPod, said she has been challenged by Apple after trying to get trademark protection for the new product name. Wilson said she is ready to change the name of the product, if the expenses for the same are borne by Apple.
Interestingly, the incident has led to change in names of a number of online retail stores that are selling MP3 player accessories.

You can not copy write a word.
It is stuff like this that makes me want companies like Apple to go out of business or worse, get absorbed by Microsoft.
Maybe Apple will start asking for the word ?I? to be removed from common usage.
Please don?t be fooled by there hip marketing. Apple is no different than any other huge corporation. They would rather us be a ?we? than and ?I? anyway.
another reason I hate apple. you know this reminds me of how M$ is...then I though wait, at least M$ is a little more respectful to people that have product that use the same common name. I;ts apples stupid fault in the first place for using such a common name.
Upon googling the word "pod" I find: the name of a rock band; a portable temporary structure; a network for professional and organizational development; a creative networking site; National Geographic's photo of the day; a collection of online games; managed instant messaging...
Do I need to go on?
Apple has been agressively trying to trademark the word "pod" any way it's used for over a year. I have e-mail correspondance from Apple legal chronicaling their outragious and often idiotic claims that they "own" a common noun. I'd be happy to copy anyone who asks.
Xerox introduced the GUI with their "Star" system in 1981 ... Apple stole same for the "Lisa" in 1983 ... Later, Apple tried to sue Microsoft for using "their" (Apple's) GUI. From where I stand, Apple is the proverbial "Pot calling the kettle black." Quit your whining and act like adults, Apple.

Maybe Apple should stop using 'Apple' as ther company name, as it infrnges on the name of a delicous type of fruit. No farmers are takng action though.
This may mean that the container peas grow n (a pod) needs its name changed. How about an escape pod? Will I be sued if I use it? (The alternative is to not escape and die) Go ahead, Apple, make my pod.
I wonder what's appropriate to use, certainly apple didn't invent the word Pod. A while back, a few friends and I started a project aimed at broadcasting content to internet sites (myspace/friendster/hi5 etc):
http://glogger.eyetap.org/about.php
We considered a number of names for this process, at the end we went for "broadcast feed." But, why not use the podcast term? it's already common.. shouldn't apple be happy with the fact that everyone is using that term?
Maybe Scandyna should ask apple to stop using the word "pod" too, they started using words like "minipod" and "podspeaker" years before apple even thought about selling music stuff.
Apple is just beginning ......... "apple" the fruit will forthwith be called "Adams Nemisis", no longer "pine apple" , it will be called, "pinefruit", your "Adams Apple" shall be referred as, "that bobbly throat thingy" ............
lol yea.... apple's gone coocoo!!
Soon microsoft will sue all the builders in the world for installing an unlicensed version of Windows in every building!
Gven Apple's naming habits (eg iMac, iBook), it would seem fairer for them to make a claim on the use of the "i" before another word rather than the "pod" part. Presumably they wouldn't want to be prevented from using the "Mac" or "Book" words by their prior users.
