Nikon has introduced its latest digital SLR camera, the Nikon D80, powered by a 10.2MP DX Format CCD image sensor.
The Nikon D80 can shoot up to 3 frames per second, and 100 consecutive images stored in JPEG format. It boots-up in 0.18 seconds, and has a shutter time of 80 milliseconds.
Besides, it has an additional 11-area auto-focus system that finds focus with superb precision, and can even track a moving object across the frame, shifting focus instantly and automatically as per the object.
The D80's large, bright 0.94x viewfinder provides a remarkable view, which according to Nikon is not found in many digital SLRs. The camera's rechargeable battery can last up to 2,700 shots on a single charge, while providing a real-time Fuel Gauge of percentage of charge left in the battery.
The D80 boasts built-in Standard or Advanced Pictmotion slideshow options, including style selections that control transitions and background music. A new RGB histogram display assists when evaluating exposures.
Other features of the camera include an all-new image Retouch menu for in-camera image editing, built-in i-TTL flash control with the ability to control up to two remote groups of Speedlights, as well as over 32 Custom settings to customize several attributes of the camera's performance.
In a statement, Edward Fasano, general manager - marketing, SLR Systems Products, Nikon, said that the Nikon D70 and D70S cameras proved to be extraordinarily successful due to the excellent value they offered to passionate photo enthusiasts. With the introduction of the D80, Nikon is significantly raising the bar for a camera in this class.
Fasano added they believe the D80 will represent the "sweet spot" for anyone looking for a new level of digital SLR camera performance and value. Paired with the new 7.5 x 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S IF-ED DX Zoom-Nikkor lens, the D80 is expected to offer even more compelling performance and versatility.
Meanwhile, the new 7.5x18-135mm lens will be optionally available with the Nikon D80, which is priced at $1299.95 with the lens, and $999.95 without the lens. The camera is expected to be available from September this year.
