SMC Networks today announced the general availability of what the company calls - its first Wireless Internet mobile phone (SMCWSKP100) for Skype software.

The SMC WiFi phone incorporates Skype software, which allows calling Skype users across-the-globe for free, as also calling ordinary landlines and mobile phones at very low cost using SkypeOut.

Jimmy Goh, vice president - marketing, SMC, said, "We are pleased to announce this leading-edge WiFi Phone that runs the widely-recognised Skype Internet calling software. The SMC WiFi Phone for Skype has been designed specifically for the Asian market."

"The new phone gives the user great flexibility and mobility, if you have access to one of the rapidly growing number of free wireless access points that support browser-less authentication, like university campuses, offices, airports, hotels, etc," Goh said.

The new phone connects to Skype through any free WiFi connection, and does not require browser authentication using 802.11 standards. The phone is very easy to set-up and use thanks to automatic registration to a Skype account and contacts.

With an internal Li-ion battery, the phone offers 3-hours continuous talk-time and 30-hours stand-by time, and can be re-charged from any USB-enabled socket.

The SMC WiFi Phone will be available in Q3 2006, for a suggested retail price of Singapore $369.

Well this instrument is ridiculously priced much like the Netgear version of this phone. Pre-orders of the Belkin Version in Smooth Black is only 179$ releasing on August 31. This particular model looks so similar to the ones available from China and Taiwan. I guess the manufacturer is the same and just prints the company's name who can afford the price.
