HP technology reportedly assisted DreamWorks Animation SKG in creating the recently-released animated film, "Over the Hedge".
The servers, workstations, and Halo collaboration studios that were required to create this computer-generated (CG) film were delivered by HP.
Lighting and special effects for the film were created using HP xw9300 workstations and ProLiant DL145G2 servers, powered by Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors.
Apparently, these systems offered enhanced computing power as compared to DreamWorks Animation's previous generation of systems, thereby helping artists to work on multiple scenes simultaneously.
The ProLiant based compute cluster for instance provided the film over 15 million render hours, which is three times more than DreamWorks Animation s popular "Shrek" movie.
Nitin Sethi, country manager - workstations, HP India, said, "HP continues to push the envelope for world-class, computer-generated films like those created by DreamWorks Animation."
Li Li Chung, vice president - workstations, personal systems group, HP (Asia Pacific and Japan), said, "HP recognizes that performance-hungry users work in a variety of environments, and that these powerful workstations provide the right set of tools to get the job done, whether people are in the office or at a job site."
Ed Leonard, chief technology officer, DreamWorks Animation SKG, said, "CG filmmaking consumes an extraordinary amount of computational power, and our creative ambition always seems to stay two steps ahead of what s possible."
During the making of this film, geography posed a major challenge for DreamWorks Animation, and HP's Halo collaboration studios enabled people in different locations to communicate vividly in real time.
Also, HP's suite of workstations is known to deliver the performance and affordability that users need to handle the most demanding applications.
